This one-year full-time course is integrated with a further three-year undergraduate degree, and will equip you with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to successfully meet the challenges of our BSc Geophysics degree.

It is aimed at those who are highly motivated but who don’t have the traditional qualifications of UK mathematics and physics A Levels.

Successful completion of this Foundation Year guarantees progression to one of seventeen subject areas, including Geophysics.

You will study full time through a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials, and independent study, with three hours of laboratory practical work each week.

Course details

Modules

Whichever degree you are aiming for you will take six core modules: Electricity and Electronics, Engineering Principles, Coursework (including computer applications), Mathematics A and B, Mechanical Science, and Routes to Success.

International students with an overall IELTS score of between 5.5 and 6.5 will replace one of the six modules above with English for Engineers and Scientists.

Assessment method

You will be assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework activities such as formal reports and laboratory reports – all of which you will encounter as typical assessment methods throughout your degree.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) DDD For the BTEC National Extended Diploma, the subject must be one of:
• Aeronautical Engineering
• Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Electrical/ Electronic Engineering
• Manufacturing Engineering

No other BTEC subjects will be accepted.

Distinctions are required in Further Engineering Mathematics and Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems modules.
Access to HE Diploma D: 45 credits 60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, of which 45 must be at Distinction, to include a minimum of one mathematics unit.

We accept Level 3 Access courses in Engineering, Computer Science or Science. No other Access courses are accepted.
Scottish Higher Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education. AQA Level 3 Technical Level (720 glh) DD Typical entry criteria will be to achieve Distinction, Distinction in the Engineering Design or Mechatronic Engineering AQA Tech Level 3, plus grade A in one A level subject (not Maths)

Offers typically exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking. Please note that we cannot accept subjects/levels that make you eligible for Direct Entry. Pass in the associated science Practical is required where applicable.
Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal D3, M2, M2 D3, M2, M2 in three Principal subjects

If you have not taken the correct Principle subjects required for direct entry (i.e. mathematics and normally a second required subject e.g. physics) then you will usually need a Foundation Year. Please refer to our website for further details.
GCSE/National 4/National 5 Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 6/B)
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 32 points Pass, with overall score of 32 points with 16 at Higher Level

OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma DD Typical entry criteria will be to achieve grade A in one A level subject (excluding Maths) plus Cambridge Technical Diploma in Engineering (Level 3) with overall grade of Distinction, Distinction.

Must also have Distinctions in Maths for Engineering and Applied Maths for Engineering modules.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate an aptitude for mathematics and may be required to take our own mathematics test. Some applicants may also be invited to attend an interview.

English language requirements

All applicants must demonstrate they possess at least a minimum standard of English language proficiency. Applicants requiring a visa to study in the UK who do not offer GCSE English language (or GCSE English) at the required level will need to meet the following English language proficiency requirement. Band B IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in all components Students who achieve band FY IELTS 5.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in all components can take the Language Pathway.
