Oxford has one of the largest physics departments in the UK, with an outstanding and broad research programme. The expertise in the department ensures the curriculum is updated in the light of developments in research.

The Philosophy Faculty is the largest in the UK, and one of the most prestigious in the world. The large number of students reading Philosophy leads to a diverse and lively philosophical community.

The Oxford research group in Philosophy of Physics is extremely active, with interests in classical space–time theories, foundations of classical statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and quantum gravity.

The fourth-year MPhysPhil option courses bring you to the threshold of current research, and can lead to subject specialism. An accepted student can also complete in three years with a BA. For more information on this course please visit ox.ac.uk/ugpp.

Access to HE Diploma D: 45 credits Some Access courses allow students to take one or two A-levels as part of the course. Scottish Advanced Higher AA - AAB Including Mathematics and Physics.

Conditional offers will usually be for AAB if a student is able to take three Advanced Highers; where this is not possible then a student would be expected to achieve AA in two Advanced Highers, as well as an A grade in an additional Higher course taken in Year 6.

Candidates are expected to have Physics and Mathematics to A-level, Advanced Higher, Higher Level in the IB or another equivalent. The inclusion of a Maths Mechanics module would also be highly recommended. Further Mathematics can be helpful to candidates in completing this course, although this is not required for admission. We expect you to have taken and passed any practical component in your chosen science subjects.

Admission tests

Physics Aptitude Test (PAT)

The PAT is a 2-hour paper-based test. It consists of two sections:

Section A (Mathematics for Physics): 10 questions on algebra, formulae and mathematical concepts.
Section B (Physics): 11 shorter physics questions.

The PAT must be taken on Wednesday 30 October 2019. All applicants must register in plenty of time and before the registration deadline, 18.00 BST on Tuesday 15 October 2019. See ox.ac.uk/pat for further information.
