The Higher National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering develops a wide range of skills related to modern engineering and technology preparing students for work in the engineering industry or for a top-up to a full engineering degree at university.
This course is designed for students aged 18 or over who aspire to work within the aeronautical engineering sector.
The emphasis of the course is implementing engineering solutions for the modern engineering environment. The course gives students the opportunity to take advantage of excellent engineering facilities situated in a purpose built environment. Students benefit from a large amount of tutor led class time (up to 14 hours a week) from our professional, friendly, and approachable staff. As a practically based course delivered through supported workshops, it’s a ‘doing’ experience in preference to a ‘listening’ one. Each module is assessed by individual or group coursework assignments. The course includes a full range of aeronautical engineering skills and technologies.
Learners studying for Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Aeronautical Engineering will be expected to develop the following skills during the programme of study: Ability to integrate a range of concepts, knowledge and skills relating to Engineering; ability to apply complex theories to practical realistic work situations in the Engineering sector; independence of approach to study and the generation of evidence; ability to engage with complex and/or unpredictable situations in electrical and electronic engineering contexts; ability to take responsibility to manage and direct their own and others’ activities; insight and judgment in relation to the margins and consequences of error; research and investigative skills; responsiveness to change and ability to multi-task; ability to innovate and work in a creative way.
Achieving a HND in Engineering will give direct access into employment in the engineering sector. It will also provide the option to top up you HND to an honours degree.
The new RQF qualification consists of 8 units. There is a required mix of Mandatory, Specialist and Optional units. You will study your mandatory units in your 1st year and your optional and specialist units in the 2nd year.
Year 1 Mandatory units: Engineering Design, Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Managing a Professional Engineering Project.
Specialist units: Aircraft Aerodynamics, Aircraft Electrical Power Distribution Systems
Optional Units: Airframe Mechanical Systems, Composite Materials for Aerospace Applications, Research Project (Pearson set), Professional Engineering Management.
Specialist Units: Further Mathematics, Aircraft Light Control Systems, Aircraft Structural Integrity
Optional Units: Avionic Systems, Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Design and Performance

All students complete an Audition/Interview and may be asked to present a portfolio of work as part of their application. A typical offer of either a combination of GCE A levels/Level 3 Diploma or an Extended Diploma at overall Merit. GCSE Mathematics and English Language are preferred at grade C or above, English as a second language at IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Mature students with suitable experience and/or portfolio of work are welcome to make an application and attend an interview and/or audition.
