Many existing computer science professionals have only basic knowledge of cyber security. They lack the expertise and skills that are required to securely design and build the complex, highly dynamic systems and software used in the modern world. To be a proficient and professional practitioner in this area requires the ability to stay up to date with rapidly changing technologies and to have the competence to apply these technologies effectively. The industry needs graduates who are well versed in applying cyber security concepts to conventional computer science problems. Graduates need, not only to understand the fundamentals of cyber security, but also to be able to apply them to the various technologies and systems that are used in a modern business context.

The Computer Science for Cyber Security programme gives students a grounding in computer science and builds on that to give them the concepts needed to produce the secure systems needed for today. The programme explores key ideas in computer science from a cyber security perspective. The theory taught in lectures is reinforced in practicals, where students have the opportunity to use industry-standard tools and techniques, in our dedicated server and networking laboratories, which provide a safe space for students to practise both offensive and defensive security techniques.

The programme’s emphasis on live projects, including group work modelled on industry-standard working patterns, gives students the opportunity to learn skills and concepts that are directly applicable to the workplace. Students on the programme also have the opportunity to undertake a placement which enables them to practise and refine their skills within a company or organisation.

The design of our programmes is informed by state of the art research being undertaken in the department. For example, the results of a recent project in collaboration with Nominet to protect parts the UK’s internet infrastructure (which was graded outstanding in terms of its outcome) has fed directly into teaching and gave students the opportunity to attend a series of technical seminars and undertake projects on modelling key parts of the UK’s internet. Students on our programmes have access to highly specialised computer laboratories where they learn the practical application of cutting edge theoretical skills and techniques.

Our aim is to provide you with an education in computer science and cyber security that will enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to pursue a career in industry, commerce or education. We also encourage you to adopt a critical and independent approach to learning.

In the first year you will study the fundamental principles of computing and networks. This includes an introduction to programming, some fundamental concepts in computing, including the first two Cisco accredited modules. In later years you will build on this to study advanced concepts in computer science, cyber security, networking and operating systems as well as the further Cisco accredited modules.

On completion of the course you will have gained a knowledge and understanding of the foundations,
techniques, limitations, developments, trends and applications of computer science and cyber security and will have experience and skills in designing, creating, developing and maintaining secure networks, computers and software.

We consider that a work placement is central to your academic development. Organisations taking our placement students have indicated their satisfaction with them and the preparation they receive in the course prior to their placement. We also believe that our graduates will have developed a well-formed ability to interact effectively within and across discipline boundaries and thus to acquire new knowledge and to develop new skills as the needs arise.
