This course aims to produce graduates who possess a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of work with children, young people and their communities. The course incorporates competencies for practice at RQF Level 4 and 5, and key transferable skills and attributes required for graduate employability and life-long learning.

The core educational aim of the programme is the formation of practitioner skills and knowledge to enable graduates to work with children and young people. Successful students may choose to progress to the BA (Hons) Youth, Childhood and Community Studies, a one year top-up programme also delivered at the College, to gain a full honours degree award.

Assessment method

You will be assessed by a presentation, an essay and a reflective portfolio.

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

UCAS Tariff 48 points

You must have achieved 48 UCAS tariff points from a relevant Level 3 qualification for children and young people's workforce or equivalent.
You must also hold Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. This may be GCSE (grade C/4), Functional Skills or units from the Access to HE Diploma.
Prior relevant experience is also required.

You must be able to demonstrate a good level of English and maths and have access to 120 hours (as a minimum) working in a relevant organisation that provides services for children/young people aged from 5 -25 years of age (paid or voluntary). Suitable placements include schools, colleges, youth centres and family support projects.

A mentor in the placement is also required to support the student with the WBL modules. You must be committed to being professional and attend a professional discussion prior to joining the programme.

You must also complete a successful Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS check).
