BTECs are work-related qualifications for students taking their first steps into employment or those already in employment and seeking career development opportunities. The purpose of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Construction and the Built Environment is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals, able to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.Students completing the course will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of construction and the built environment, with a focus on civil engineering. They will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately and they will have the qualities needed for employment that requires some degree of personal responsibility. They will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent initiatives, organisational competence and problem-solving strategies. They will be adaptable and flexible in their approach to construction and the built environment, show resilience under pressure, and meet challenging targets within a given resource.
The qualifications aim to widen the career prospects of those who undertake them. The Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) is at level 4 (the same as the first year of a UK Honours degree). Pearson BTECs provide progression into the workplace either directly or via study at university and are also designed to meet employers needs. Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications are therefore widely recognised by industry and higher education as the principal vocational qualification at levels 4 and 5.
