Our research extends from theoretical mechanics through computational modelling to advanced engineering and incorporates subject-focused Research Groups; and problem-focused Research Programmes.
The School of Engineering is a modern School which offers Honours Degrees of MEng and BEng, and postgraduate opportunities in a wide range of topics across the spectrum of engineering activity.
The School has a strong tradition of success in research with an international reputation in a number of areas including applied dynamics, impact mechanics, engineering materials, sediment transport, communications protocols, and holography.
All areas of research in the School are supported by modern laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and fully networked computing facilities including major engineering commercial software. There is excellent technical support provided by electronic and mechanical engineering workshops.
Students undertake a research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor and, unlike a postgraduate taught degree by coursework and dissertation, there are no formal lectures or seminars and work is not formally examined until after the final thesis is submitted. The thesis is required to display evidence of originality or present a satisfactory, orderly and critical exposition of existing knowledge within the field concerned.
An Upper 2nd Class Honours undergraduate degree in an appropriate field.
