For those that study the HND in Computing (Security), the emphasis is on implementing computing solutions for the modern computing environment. This means focusing on programming, professionalism, web design and database management techniques and technologies which underpin networks, cloud computing and security. The course gives students the opportunity to take advantage of excellent networking and software engineering facilities situated in a purpose built environment. Students benefit from a large amount of tutor led class time (up to 12 hours a week) from our professional, friendly, and approachable staff. As a practically based course delivered through supported workshops, it’s a ‘doing’ experience in preference to a ‘listening’ one. The course includes a full range of computing skills and technologies including programming, web design, server-side web development, networking and computer platforms.
At the end of year 1 students achieve an Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma having studied 8 units totalling 120 credits.
At the end of year 2 students achieve an Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma having studied 15 units totalling 245 credits.
Skills and experience gained
Learners studying for Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Computing and Systems Development will be expected to develop the following skills during the programme of study: • ability to integrate a range of concepts, knowledge and skills relating to computing and systems development • ability to apply complex theories to practical realistic work situations in the computing sector • independence of approach to study and the generation of computing evidence • ability to engage with complex and/or unpredictable situations in computing contexts • ability to take responsibility to manage and direct their own and others’ activities • insight and judgement in relation to the margins and consequences of error • research and investigative skills • responsiveness to change and ability to multitask • ability to innovate and work in a creative way.
After the course The HND in Computing allows progression into or within employment in the IT and computing sectors, either directly on achievement of the award or following further study to degree level.
Students may wish to convert the BTEC HND into a degree by completing the top up year which is available at Chichester College or other UK universities.
