Our Biomedical Science degree provides you with the essential skills required by professional biomedical scientists at our purpose designed Science Centre.

Our MSci Biomedical Science degree can lead to a wide range of exciting careers in biomedical sciences. You’ll study in our purpose-built Science Centre under the guidance of specialist academics. Our expertise includes clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, clinical immunology, cellular pathology and molecular diagnostics. A high proportion of your class contact time will be in the laboratory.

Towards the end of Year 1, you’ll be able to apply for a competitive place on our Applied Biomedical Science route. Ideal if you are looking to become a registered biomedical scientist with the NHS, this route involves taking a 14-week clinical placement and completion of the registration portfolio, which will make you eligible to apply for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration when you graduate.

Course details


Year 1 core units include Bioscience Concepts and Practice, Structure and Function, Building Blocks of Life, Professional Practice for Biomedical Scientists and Biology of Disease.

Year 2 core units include Professional Practice and Placement, Infection Science, Public Health, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology and Immunology, Biochemistry and Blood Science and Physiological Function.

Year 3 core units include Research Project, Cellular Pathology, Medical Genetics, Human Infectious Disease, Haematology and Transfusion Science and Clinical Immunology.

Year 4 core units include Advanced Research Methods, Biological Research Assistantship or Life Sciences Placement, Advanced Biological Techniques and Specialist Topics in Biosciences.
