University of Wales Trinity Saint David has opted into the TEF and received a Silver award.
On our Computer Animation degree we help students learn the art of animation, to bring life to their characters, to create stories and strong visuals. Applicants at interview look to see what we do best. They bring sheets of ideas and drawings, traditional/digital graphics and comic art. They want to transform these into moving images and films. Since the first graduates (2003), students learn to animate, to make films and/or become fantastic 2D animators - the next best designers, modellers or conceptual artists. We continue to place graduates in some of the world’s best VFX studios, animation companies and as animators on games, shorts, internships and more. The openness and range of work/ approach in class is often seen as an attractive quality, giving students an understanding of the many production roles in the animation process.

In the first year students are given enough guidance to learn the relevant software and to begin the process of developing an individual visual style. Students begin with an introduction to a variety of animation terms, methods and principles in drawing, design, modelling and animation. Via traditional and digital techniques the students will learn the foundations and principles of how to animate, plan/design shots and sequences, produce effective pre-production, animatics and pre-visualisations. The second and third years broaden the scope of their activities within more storytelling, character animation, visual effects, or new technology. A final year Major Project offers the student the opportunity to develop their specialism to a high level where it can form the centrepiece of a showreel.
Coursework within the animation content takes the notion that the art and craft of digital communication is all-important, its visual design, storytelling power, etc. Students will learn methods in how to immerse the audience in their very own short films and character animations, to construct their own 2D and 3D sequences, effects and reels. We are keen to stress the importance of developing a strong visual style, to learn how to animate well and to be able to construct scenes and shots and stories.2D traditional. 2D digital. 3D. Stopframe, etc. etc. We also consider the history and development of animation and film and continually reference methods of digital designers and animators, conceptual artists, etc. throughout the course of study.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
