This well-established and creative programme is aimed at individuals who would like to develop a detailed understanding of Graphic Design and Advertising through real assignment-based projects. Offering full tutor contact working in a nurturing studio based environment you will connect with tutors, guest speakers, industry practitioners and companies.
This award aims to equip individuals with the skills, knowledge and attributes to solve the type of communication problems faced by practising professional graphic designers in a range of print, screen and increasingly multiple media scenarios. As well as developing sort after technical skills and workflow knowledge, students will also be constantly challenged to think creatively and about the strategic implementation of communication concepts.
Supplementary to industry standard graphic design skills and knowledge acquisition, students will be challenged to become increasingly contextually and commercially aware, capable of self-direction and autonomous learning and able to conduct reflective and objective assessments on the value of their work. This will be done through carefully designed learning opportunities combining workshops, set and later self-initiated assignment briefs.
Utilising strong links with businesses and the design industry generally within the region and nationally, students will be presented with a range of opportunities to engage with work based learning through a combination of live client briefs, cross curricula collaborations, bespoke design agency set briefs and recognised national and international design competitions. In doing so, this breadth of engagement will be used to provide commercial opportunities and bring realism to the student experience, helping build professional portfolios, digital profiles and to broader employability skills by emphasising the need to engage with external agents in the development and realisation of assignment outcomes.
Study will also be underpinned by a full cultural programme which includes visits to design conferences and festivals in the UK and abroad.
Visual Literacy (30 credits)
This module aims to introduce design principles and skills that provide the structure around graphic design. Key areas of learning include - design process, content differentiation, layout fundamentals and the anatomy of typography, exploring the relationship between them. The module concludes in finished print projects and or peer competitions.
Branding (30 credits)
This module aims to introduce how to identify key features that drive an identity and how they are represented across print and screen media. Students will learn specialist print and screen skills, whilst developing an objective perspective towards their work through client input and critique sessions. Emphasise is placed on client simulation or live projects.
Advertising (30 credits)
This unit aims to distinguish between designing and advertising, testing students’ abilities to deconstruct a product/service and present its benefits in a persuasive manner. Emphasis is placed on scamps and copywriting, which must be engaging and persuasive before the aesthetics of work is even considered. Students will learn to objectively judge the quality of their work using different criteria to those leaned to date through critique sessions.
Professional and Academic Development (30 credits)
This unit will support student transition to graduate level study and professional careers. It will focus on developing and re-enforcing critical, analytical, academic and linguistic skills and preparing Students vocationally by enhancing their knowledge and skills to inform existing or potential professional careers. The unit will support students in developing employability skills and aid them in developing their professionalism in relation to their subject area.
Industry Practise (30 credits)
This unit encourages students to consider industry roles for future employment and tackle industry problems within realistic turnarounds and deadlines. The simulated work environment will teach students the importance of a cohesive working team emphasising the importance of creativity, communication, timekeeping and role responsibilities alongside the standards required both in strength of ideas and art-working.
Specialist Practise (30 credits)
This unit gives students the chance to work on an area/specialism they are interested in supported by tutor mentoring. Students can chose briefs that match their interests and aspirations creatively. Preparation in meeting national creative standards involves objective critiquing of contemporaries work identifying what makes strong creative solutions and pushing themselves to answers briefs with vision and clarity.
Self-Directed Project (30 credits)
This unit encourages students to develop their own interests and direction through writing or finding a suitable creative brief. Students are supported in framing and planning this significant project so that they can manage it autonomously. This will be the key piece in the student’s portfolio therefore, students teaching and learning initially centres around choosing and testing appropriate significant projects.
Practice Based Research Project (30 credits)
The Unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to further explore discipline-specific knowledge and undertake a research project in a self-selected area of professional practice with the context of the Award studied.
On-going Feedback - You will be assessed in an on-going manner and give feedback on a one-to-one basses through weekly studio teaching and critique’s. The course offers full tutor contact hours and your feedback will come from tutors in group crits (or one-to-one sessions) with guest speakers and / or industry practitioners and companies.
Final Module Assessment – Your project success will be assessed through the final pieces you submit for each project, for example:
