The purpose of the HN in Business is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the business sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The course is designed to equip you with the business knowledge, skills, behaviour and understanding to achieve high performance in the global business environment. The course has been designed to provide education and training for a range of careers in business, including management, administration, human resources, marketing, entrepreneurship, accounting and finance.

Your course consists of 16 x 15 credit modules at levels 4/5 over 2 academic years.

Modules

Your course consists of 8 x 15 credit modules at levels 4 over 1 academic year

Unit 1: Business and the Business Environment - A background to business, the functions of an organisation and the wider business environments in which organisations operate.

Unit 2: Marketing Essentials - This is an introduction to the principles of marketing in order to develop a basic marketing plan that employs elements of the marketing mix to achieve results specific to the organisation.

Unit 3: Human Resource Management - Understand and apply principles of effective Human Resource Management (HRM), exploring tools and techniques to maximise employee contribution within an organisation.

Unit 4: Management and Operations - Understand the difference between the function of a manager and the role of a leader, investigating characteristics, behaviours and traits which support effective management and leadership.

Unit 5: Management Accounting - This unit is an introduction to the fundamentals of management accounting which apply to the wider business environment, and the organisations which operate within that environment. You will explore how management accounting uses financial data to aid planning decisions, and the monitoring and control of finance within organisations.

Unit 6: Managing a Successful Business Project - This unit offers an opportunity to demonstrate the skills required for managing and implementing a project. You will undertake independent research and investigation for carrying out and executing a business project which meets appropriate business aims and objectives.

Unit 7: Business Law - The unit is to enhance your understanding of how business law is applied to the running of a company. You will gain knowledge of business law and examine the impact of the law on business operations and decision-making.

Unit 8: Innovation and Commercialisation - This unit aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of innovation and commercialisation. In today’s competitive landscape it is critical that organisations continually innovate both their product offering and processes to ensure that they remain competitive in the market. You will look at a number of tools and techniques organisations use to drive innovation and become more commercial in their approach.

Assessment method

This programme is fully assignment based. The accountancy module may include testing.
