Brunel’s Department of Mathematics focuses on equipping you with a wealth of mathematical knowledge and understanding that you can apply to the worlds of science, technology, business or wherever else your interests lie. Mathematics is a fundamental subject that is constantly developing and a discipline in its own right. It supplies the theory behind countless commercial, industrial and technological activities. Mathematical models underpin engineering, the applied sciences, computing and many aspects of management. On our programmes, you’ll develop in-depth knowledge and understanding as well as excellent study skills that will be hugely valuable whatever career path you follow after graduation.
You can select our general Mathematics course or opt for one of the specialist pathways. If you are not sure which programme to follow, that’s fine. You’ll have the chance to change after the course starts. Once you are at Brunel, you can explore what works best for you. You’ll be taught in small groups of about 20 students for the first few weeks of Level 1 to help you to adapt to the demands of university study. Extra support is available if you start to fall behind. Lectures will provide a broad overview of key concepts and ideas, giving you a framework for more in-depth study. You’ll also work in small group tutorials on mathematics-related problems with guidance from a member of staff.
This course is for mathematicians who want to work in the fast-moving worlds of finance or commerce. Two thirds of the course content focuses on developing your mathematical knowledge and skills. The rest of the course covers financial markets, corporate investment and finance. You’ll be able to study in-depth those areas of mathematics that most appeal to you. In Level 1 you’ll undertake three projects on topics that illustrate some of the diverse applications of mathematics to the real world. In Level 3, you’ll produce a substantial research project under the guidance of a tutor.
There is massive demand within financial institutions for mathematically trained graduates with an awareness of markets and their workings. The recent combination of financial deregulation, increased globalisation and technological advance has led to a huge increase in the nature and volume of financial derivatives contracts traded around the world. To help you get ready for work, we run popular employability skills workshops for all students. Topics include CV writing, job applications, cover letters and testing centres. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend talks by former students and employers on how to succeed in the job market. Our graduates have gone on to careers with Abbey, Accenture, Bank of New York, BBC, British Aerospace, BT, Coca Cola, Deutsche Bank, Deloitte and Touche, Ernst and Young, HSBC, IBM, Kodak, Lloyds, Merrill Lynch, Nortel, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Xerox and Virgin Trains.
Mathematics is a very broad-based course, instead of focusing on a single area we aim to help you develop skills that you can use in many diverse ways. Typical year 1 modules are Transition to Independent Learning of Mathematics, Calculus, Fundamentals, Linear Algebra, Probability & Statistics, Algorithms & Numerical Methods, Financial Markets, Introduction to Data Handling for Finance. Typical year 2 modules, Multivariable Calculus, Advanced Calculus and Numerical Methods, Linear Methods, Elements of Combinatorics, Analysis 1, Probability & Statistics II, Operational Research, Employability Skills, Elements of Investment Mathematics, Computing for Finance.
