The BEng Aerospace Engineering provides you with a basic preparation for professional careers in the aerospace industry (design, development, testing and operation of vehicles and systems), as well as in other areas, such as research, management, technical development and finance.

We aim to instil not just a theoretical knowledge of engineering science, but also a solid base of practical skills, an understanding of design, comprehension of the commercial world and competence in transferable skills (problem solving, team working, creativity and IT).

The degree also provides an excellent route for individuals wishing to proceed to postgraduate education as quickly as possible.

Years 1 and 2 of this course are common with those of the MEng in Aerospace Engineering. Subject to satisfactory performance, it is possible for you to transfer to one of our MEng courses.

Aims

The core BEng course is identical with the first two years of the MEng course. This course achieves the same learning outcomes for those years. The course is intended to provide you with the skills necessary for a successful career in industry. In addition, it provides a route into postgraduate learning that is tailored to individual areas of interest, so that students with a BEng qualification can go on to apply for an MSc course in a more specialised area of Engineering.

Satisfactory completion of the course will give you:

  • A comprehensive knowledge of engineering science and a strong base of practical skills.

  • Prepare you for a successful career in industry.

  • Develop your competence in transferable skills, particularly team working, creativity and adaptability.

  • Provide a route into more specialised postgraduate study (MSc), as opposed to taking an MEng which covers a more broad, wide of topics.

Special Features

The first year of study establishes a strategic overview of the main areas of aerospace engineering and introduces you to underlying science and mathematics. The second and third years develop the key technical knowledge and understanding that you need for entry into industry or postgraduate study.

Throughout all years at Manchester, there is a strong focus on the attainment of transferable skills, such as analysis, design, modelling, organisation and problem-solving. This enables you to pursue careers in a range of high technology fields after graduation, as engineers, consultants, managers or researches.

  • There are opportunities for you to specialise in your third year .

  • There is a common first year, and opportunity for you to transfer to the MEng course.

Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore there will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) DDM We consider the National Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in a subject relevant to the chosen course. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Extended Diploma with Grades DDM plus A Level Maths at Grade A.
Access to HE Diploma We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3), with Merit or Distinction in a subject area relevant to the chosen course. For entry onto this course we would also require an A level in Mathematics at Grade A in addition to the HE Diploma.
Scottish Higher Three Advanced Highers including Mathematics and Physics at Grades AAB.

We will accept two Highers in place of the 3rd Advanced Higher. English Language and Mathematics not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (minimum National 5 Grade C/Intermediate 2 Grade C/Standard Grade Credit level Grade 3).

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal D3, D3, M2 We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three distinct subjects overall is taken.

We require Grades D3,D3,M2 including Mathematics and Physics.

Extended Project The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.
GCSE/National 4/National 5 Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including:

Five GCSES/iGCSES at Grades A*-C or 9-4.

English Language and Mathematics are required at GCSE/iGCSE level with a minimum Grade C/4. GCSE/iGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/iGCSE English Language.

Please note that if you hold English as a second language iGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications or achieve a higher grade in your iGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the academic School for clarification.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 35 points 35 points overall with 6,6,5 in Higher Level subjects.

The course specific requirements are: 35 points overall with 6,6,5 at Higher level in Mathematics, Physics and one other subject

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (first teaching September 2015) The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma/Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate and usually requires two A Levels or equivalent to be included within this. The minimum grade required will normally be the same as the lowest grade listed in the A Level entry requirements. (Our BEng A level requirements are Grades AAB).
