The aim of the programme is to provide an opportunity for experienced professionals to become autonomous researchers and to gain deep and critical insight into their own professional practices and concerns; in order to be awarded an EdD, students must complete a discrete programme of 540 credit points of evidenced learning; 300 of these points are awarded for a thesis; 240 points are awarded for the completion of 6 40-credit point modules.

Course details


Year 1: Research methods for professional enquiry; social theory and education: key issues and debates. Year 2: Critical policy analysis for the public services; creative practices. Year 3: Institutions, discontinuities and systems of thought; thesis in context. Years 4 and 5: Thesis research project.

Assessment method

Essays and report writing; practice-based portfolio work; presentations; thesis; viva.

Entry requirements

Normally the student would be expected to have completed a Master's degree before enrolling on the Education Doctorate.
