Policing Askham Bryan College

Undergraduate

Awarded by: Leeds Trinity University

The FdA Policing is a two year pre-join degree for entry into the service as a Police Constable. Policing policies and practices are constantly changing, with modern day crimes such as domestic violence, hate crime, cybercrime and historic abuse at the forefront of today’s judicial system.
Success in this field demands tact, empathy, strategic thinking and a solid knowledge of policing and legislation. As no two days are the same, this course focuses on developing adaptability, social awareness and victim empathy, as well as addressing modern day issues and crimes. The course provides the student with the necessary knowledge and some of the skills required for the Police Constable role and incorporates criminological theory and basic investigatory techniques.
This degree is an employment-related higher qualification targeted at those seeking to establish a career in the police service. During the foundation years you’ll study modules which will help you to improve your critical thinking, essay writing and academic skills, as well as giving you an introduction to some of the themes involved in the this field. Alongside your learning, you also get the chance to conduct critical research, with our experienced staff, learn from highly-regarded guest visitors and take part in invaluable practical modules, including work based learning where you would be expected to enrol as a special constable. Progression after completion would be onto the BA Policing (top up) which provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain knowledge and skills and a level 6 qualification, a required qualification to gain employment as a police constable from 2020. This degree will be delivered from September 2019 and is one of the three nationally recognised entry routes into the police service as a Police Constable from 2020.
