The study of maths plays an important, yet sometimes overlooked, part in society and modern life. Its application can be found anywhere from telecommunications, retail and engineering to social media and search engine algorithms.

In its essence, Mathematics is about the solving of problems. Studying this course at Newman University sees you build on your previous study of the subject, expanding and deepening your mathematical knowledge and skills, developing a respect for the beauty of mathematics. There are analytical and statistical aspects of Mathematics which will be developed during the course of your study, aiding skills which will be called upon in professional settings. As the use of ‘big data’ proliferates in society this degree provides you with the skills and expertise to manipulate data and use mathematical tools to generate meaningful information. You will learn the various ways in which Mathematics is applied to real life situations and be introduced to mathematical modelling, which aids the practical aspect of your course.

Statistical thinking is emphasised, with no previous knowledge assumed; the ability to apply statistics to massive datasets is a relevant skill to have and is increasingly an asset desired by employers, who are looking to recruit Mathematics graduates. For aspiring maths teachers, there is the option within this degree to opt-in to a teacher training pathway to obtain recommendation for qualified teacher status (QTS) **(please note that the allocation of numbers of places on this opt-in from the DfE should be confirmed by July/August 2019)**. Please check with the Admissions department for any additional entry requirements necessary to be able to progress onto the opt-in route to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status


  • You will be asked to solve problems, based on real life scenarios and in areas of your own choosing, which forms an extensive final year project. You will learn and understand software systems that are industry-standard to support your problem solving.

  • You will undertake a work placement in a mathematical related role, which contributes towards your final degree classification.

  • You are taught in small groups, facilitating workshop discussion and developing communication skills used in both academic and professional environments.

  • The course has also been designed to integrate with the Mathematics degree at Newman University in Wichita, USA. You can study for a semester at our partner university, adding an international dimension to the degree. There are no additional course fees for the international part, but you are responsible for travel, accommodation and subsistence costs. (N.B. This option is not available to QTS opt-in route)

Mathematics graduates are extremely well equipped for an ever-changing world and job marketplace. Due to their analytical and statistical skills, graduates are suited to most industries. The workshop-style teaching at Newman University will help you to develop strong communication skills, which are especially useful in roles where mathematical subject matter needs to be explained to non-mathematicians.

UCAS Tariff 104 - 144 points You must achieve at least 104 UCAS points including a minimum of CC at A Level or equivalent (e.g. MM at BTEC Diploma or MPP at BTEC Extended Diploma) towards the total tariff.
A level A level grade C or above in mathematics is required.
Access to HE Diploma As a points tariff of 104 points is not a combination attainable Access Students must achieve a 106 point tariff requirement with the following combination of Distinction, Merit and/ or Pass grades at level 3 achieved from a completed Access course.
e.g. D27-M0-P18; D24-M6-P15; D21-M12-P12; D18-M18-P9; D15-M24-P6; D12-M24-P3; D9-M36-P0

A Level grade C in Mathematics or above is required.

5 GCSEs at grade 4 (or C) or above to include GCSE English Language and Mathematics or recognised equivalents are also required.
