Sports Therapy York College

The Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy provides a quality learning experience delivered by dedicated staff who have extensive experience in sports therapy. It is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists and is ideal for students who wish to move into this ever-growing industry or progress on to post-graduate level study. As a Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy student, your studies will be firmly rooted in the core disciplines of sport and exercise sciences and you will learn to use your skills and knowledge to work with a range of people to assist in the rehabilitation of sport-related injuries. To ensure that you have the widest range of skills required and that you get support with a variety of career specialisms, we’ll provide you with the opportunity to pick from a range of vocationally-related qualifications, so you can tailor-make the course you want to your own interests. This could include a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, first aid qualifications or a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification, all studied alongside your main academic programme. We place a great deal of emphasis on work based learning and applied experience, a critical part of this foundation degree, as it will develop your communication skills and business acumen. We provide a pitch side sports therapy service to the Sports Development Centre teams and run the Sports Injury Clinic at York College, giving you plenty of practical experience. Sales from the Clinic go back into the course resources, ensuring great facilities. We also have strong relationships with York City Knights RLFC, the Army, York Acorn RLFC, the City of York Athletic Club, North Riding County FA Girls Centre of Excellence, Tadcaster Physio Clinic and Middlesborough football club, all providing you with direct industry experience opportunities.

At York College we have an established reputation in delivering the highest quality Sport and Exercise Sciences and Sports Therapy tuition. You will study in a vibrant, fast-paced environment which includes a dedicated sports therapy clinic, a sport and exercises sciences laboratory, a fitness suite and a range of other state of the art sports facilities. As the programme has been designed to allow a clear progression to the BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy, students are eligible for student membership with the Society of Sports Therapists.

Assessment will be continuous via a wide range of methods including practical exams, seminars, projects, presentations, and dissertation reports. Some of the additional vocational qualifications, which are optional, may also require the submission of portfolio evidence and the completion of externally set and marked exams.
This course enables students to progress to an MSc in Physiotherapy, but to effectively practice under the title of a Sports Therapist, you would need to complete a level 6 ‘top up’ degree in Sports Therapy. The natural progression route for students is the BSc Sports Therapy at York College. Alternatively, students can progress into a final year BSc at York St John University in their Sports Science and Injury Management, Sports Science for Performance Conditioning or Sports Science (Exercise Practitioner) pathways. Other universities offering Sports Therapy, Sports Rehabilitation and Injury Management degrees may accept students onto year two or three depending on grade classification and experience. This programme will aim to provide progression into a wide variety of career specialisms, ideally in Sports Therapy related careers. Other vocational opportunities will be in areas such as the fitness industry, personal training and working with professional sports clubs.
