Course summary
Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), this course will enable you to gain a scientific understanding of the mind, brain, behaviour and experience. The course focusses on psychological investigation of everyday behaviour and has a strong focus on applying core psychological theory to understand why people think act and feel the way that they do. Students will be encouraged to analyse psychological theory and methods of investigation throughout the degree. The programme is designed to take students from an analysis of everyday functions and attendant important behaviours, through core discipline knowledge of theory and empirical findings relevant to those behaviours and others, to an appreciation and understanding of contexts in which psychology can be applied, and professional psychologists work. A questioning approach to behaviour is thus encouraged from year one. Practical and laboratory experience and skills development is embedded within this process, as is practical experience of research participation, thus linking the development of research and analytic skills to explaining behaviours relevant to everyday functioning and experiences. This approach is carried through to the final year where psychological knowledge is applied to contexts relevant to peoples’ lives and work. The BSc Psychology from Chichester is an excellent basis for a career conferring core knowledge and skills to enter a wide range of professions.
Modules
Our curriculum features core subjects such as Developmental Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Biological Psychology, Social Psychology, Research Methods for Psychology, Individual Differences, and Cognitive Psychology. We also offer innovative modules such as Understanding Relationships, Positive Psychology, Being Employed, Psychology and Social Issues, Professional Skills In Psychology, Work And Organisations. Your first year focuses on the science of our everyday experiences and you will be introduced to statistics. In Year Two you will expand your knowledge of all areas of psychology and develop your analysis and criticism skills. In your final year you will apply your skills and understanding as you develop your professional skills and complete a final year project. You will be able to select additional optional modules to specialise in the practical application of theory to a range of disciplines including sport and exercise, health, business, marketing, early years, education, and the creative arts.
Assessment method
You will be assessed through a range of assignments including scientific reports, essays, group and individual presentations, poster design, multiple choice papers, short answer papers, research participation and essay exams. You may also be assessed on in-class debates, quizzes and how you apply analytical techniques to problem solving.
