The Sport Coaching and Development Level 4 & 5 course prepares students for employment by developing both academic and vocational skills related to coaching sports and working with development programmes

The course qualifies students with an HNC/HND in Sport: Community Sport and Physical Activity over 2 years, completing the HNC in the first year and HND in the second year.

Course content will reflect the ever-changing Sports development and coaching industries with links developed with employers within this sector. You will undertake varying tasks to develop your skills, both academically and vocationally, and will produce reports, presentations and other practical activities to demonstrate your abilities. The units you will be studying are designed to help you achieve your potential within future employment.

The course incorporates subjects ranging from advanced coaching and activity leadership through to project management and understanding technology in sport.

The units span across the sector providing skills to work in a range of employment from holiday resorts, sports clubs and those specialising in development programmes.

As a Havant and South Downs College student, you will have the opportunity to participate in formal work placements and/or part-time employment to develop your professional skills.

Together with undertaking the core course units, you will develop your skills to a high level through:

  • Focusing on the development of higher-level skills in a leisure and sports based environment

  • Enhancing the personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in working life

  • Having an opportunity to gain critical awareness and the ability to research, synthesise and handle complex information

  • Providing flexibility, knowledge and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development.

You will attend up to 15 hours of workshops, lectures and tutorials each week over a period of up to 34 weeks per academic year. The course will be taught with an approach that delivers:

  • A balance between practical skills development and knowledge acquirement

  • Links made between theory and practice in the workplace

  • Utilisation of industry knowledgeable staff

  • Constant links and work with industry employers

  • Opportunities to apply learning to actual events within the sector.

  • Face to face and online learning

On completion of the HNC course, you may wish to seek employment, apprenticeships or progress to the level 5 HND course. On completion of the HND course you will have gained further skills to enhance your employment prospects.

Our campus has a range of modern facilities to enhance students learning experience including music recording studios, gym facilities, a nursery, to our own working restaurant and beauty salon and much more. There are frequent buses from the surrounding areas and local train stations in Havant and Cosham. Located off Junction 4 of the A3(M), the College has extensive free onsite parking.

Assessment method

We assess you in ways that encourage a deeper understanding and allow you to develop your skills through: reports, multiple choice tests, essays, written exams, mini projects, presentations and review articles.
Each unit is graded Pass, Merit and Distinction and aggregated over the duration of the course to determine your final grade.
