This degree develops high calibre engineers who are able to function both as an engineer and a technology leader in sectors such as aerospace, marine, automotive, alternative energy, oil and gas, and other high-tech industries.

Industry-seasoned practitioners and guest speakers deliver your training in our brand new state-of-the art Innovation Centre, giving you the knowledge and skills required to understand the behaviour, performance and limitations of new technologies, in addition to modelling and simulating the performance of technologies, whilst learning how to apply them to real-world situations.

You can spend year 3 on a work placement, gaining a minimum of 30 weeks’ experience in a relevant industry. Our students have previously had placements with Jaguar Cars Ltd, Xerox, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd and Dyson Appliances Ltd to name but a few. This proves invaluable in helping to enhance your employment prospects. You will be enrolled onto the 4-year degree, but can opt out of the placement year.

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), this degree fully meets the academic standards of Incorporated Engineer (IEng), which means you can apply for IEng status after gaining suitable experience in an engineering role.

Within six months of completing their course, 90% of our students who study our Engineering courses are working in professional or managerial positions (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education, 2018).

Alternatively you could apply for the integrated Master's degree which can be completed over five years of study.

You will study a range of modules including Engineering Design with Practice, Engineering Principles A+B, Materials with Practice, Electrical and Electronic Principles, Engineering Mathematics, Manufacturing and Engineering Materials, Stress and Dynamics, Engineering Simulation, Fluids and Thermodynamics, Management and Commercialisation, Engineering Mathematics for Mechanical Systems Design, Engineering Project, Thermofluids and Energy Conversion, Business Development, Advanced Stress and Vibration & Computational Engineering. You can spend your third year on a work placement scheme.

Apprenticeships: We recognise the transferable knowledge and skills gained through apprenticeships and welcome applications from students with the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Mature applicants: We recognise that mature applicants may have a wealth of experience rather than formal qualifications, so we’ll consider your application on these merits if it’s included in your application. You’ll need to apply to BU in the usual way through UCAS and you may be invited to an interview to discuss your suitability for the course based on the experience you tell us about in your application.
