This programme, written in collaboration with industry leading AV companies (Nitelites, RnB) prepares you for employment upon graduation. You will study sound, visuals, mixed media, and key academic skills in order to directly address the needs of the sector. The programme combines creative and technical challenges, offering four primary career progression options: live audiovisual engineer (sound, light, projection, 3D projection); site-specific audiovisual technician (schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, etc); audiovisual capture (sound recording, camera operation, vision mixing, sound/video editing & repair); audiovisual artist (live visuals, audiovisual installations, multimedia/online projects, etc).
Early modules introduce audiovisual capture, lighting, video projection, camera operation, and editing. Later modules allow you to specialise. You will learn how to plan and deliver live audiovisual events; edit, mix, and polish audiovisual content in post-production; and build/test/operate IT networking infrastructure for audiovisual content.
The course modules cover a breadth of scenarios in the live audiovisual sector including conventional music/theatre productions, business conferences, and experimental interactive audiovisual installations. The latter are facilitated by creative programming modules: one module per year focussed on creating audiovisual content via computer programming, using software such as Processing, p5.js, Arduino IDE, and Max/MSP.
As an audiovisual technology student you will have access to our professional hardware/software resources, including: five control rooms running Pro Tools HDX systems, Apple Logic, and Avid S6 desks; Canon C200 4K cameras; a 300 capacity live performance theatre; audiovisual labs running the following professional software: Pro Tools, Apple Final Cut, WYSIWYG, QLab, iZotope RX, Max/MSP, and Ableton Live.
In a recent national teaching review, the Teaching Excellence Framework panel judged that Middlesbrough College "delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK." The report also stated that Middlesbrough College offered "optimum levels of contact time and class sizes, provided for students who are well supported by their tutors, underpinned by a comprehensive, proactive and flexible academic and pastoral support programme”. Modules are assessed by a range of audiovisual media, written assignments, reports, individual and group presentations.
