Psychology provides insights that help us to understand the behaviour of people in business and organisational contexts. This course uses knowledge of the human mind and our behaviour as a basis to investigate fundamental organisational functions, such as human resource management, finance, marketing, strategy and technology.

This programme is run by Europe’s oldest department of organisational psychology.

Examinations are held for approximately half of the assessments; the rest are assessed by coursework in the form of essays, typically 2000-3000 words in length, and case studies, presentations, group work and in-course tests. Research reports are required for the methods teaching. The final research project is assessed 100% by coursework.

Points of entry
The following entry points are available for this course:
- Year 1
If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. If you don’t meet the minimum IELTS requirement, we offer pre-sessional English courses, foundation programmes and language support services to help you improve your English language skills and get your place at Birkbeck.

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.
Applicants will normally be expected to have five GCSEs at grade C or new grade 4 or above, including mathematics. Applicants who do not hold this level of qualification may be required to carry out a skills audit at a selection evening, which comprises English and mathematics. This audit assesses an applicant’s potential to cope with, and benefit from, a particular programme of study.

Additional entry requirements
Institutions Own Test (IOT)
Skills Audit - Maths and English. Applicants will normally be expected to have grade C GSCE-level English and maths. Applicants who do not hold this level of qualification may be required to carry out a skills audit at a selection evening, which comprises maths and English. This audit assesses an applicants potential to cope with and benefit from a particular programme of study.
