Taught in a traditional Art School environment, this unique undergraduate programme has been specifically designed to develop expertise in textile design, craft and creativity. It focuses on developing independent and creative thinking and has been designed to be challenging both artistically and practically. Utilising weave, knit and embroidery as well as digital print and surface design techniques the course prepares you for the interdisciplinary nature of the creative design industry.

This course encourages students to explore a dynamic mix of materials and decoration for Surface Pattern and Textile applications. You will experiment with a diverse range of media and processes, taking an innovative approach to the design and production of surfaces and fabrics for interiors, fashion, products and gift-ware. The course has been designed with a clear focus on employability. We actively support each student's individual development through live projects with design businesses, international design competitions and professional development tuition. Activities such as study trips to professional trade fairs and studios, overseas study and graduate placements provide our graduates with real commercial skills and future employment opportunities.

Over the duration of the course, you will utilise a combination of creative intuition and acquired technical skills, using programmes such as CAD, to fully execute your creativity in a professional outlet. To adhere to the employability aspect of the course, you will also learn about the business and marketing aspect of the sector and the development of a professional design portfolio. You will have the opportunity to work on live projects from industry, win sponsorships and participate in a work experience scheme. You will benefit greatly from visits by practising designers, textile artists, designer-makers and business professionals. Visits to professional trade fairs for fashion and interiors and the opportunity to study abroad in beautiful cities such as Florence, Barcelona, Paris, Venice or Frankfurt all provide you with a realistic and broad knowledge of the subject and help you prepare for your future employment.

Our programme has an excellent track record of successful graduate careers in design-related industries. As a versatile and independent graduate you will be able to pursue a career within any of a wide variety of textile and surface design-related professions. Recent graduate destinations have included designers, marketing assistants, merchandisers, costumer makers and gallery management. Alternatively, the versatility of the degree also lends itself to postgraduate study, or to teacher training.

You will have the opportunity to learn from both practitioners and experienced professionals and will work with artists and designers a well as local and national galleries, museums and exhibitions. You will develop your creative ability within a well-resourced learning environment which offers excellent studio and workshop facilities.

Course details


Level 4 (Year One full-time). You will be introduced to the fundamentals of design briefs as well as a broad range of textile skills in constructed textiles and surface pattern design. A strong emphasis is placed on creative experimentation, sampling, visual development and research skills. A broader contextual awareness of the design world is also supported through lectures and seminars. Modules include: Creative Practice - Introduction; Creative Practice - Experimentation; Design Your Futures - Design Research; Design Context.

Level 5 (Year Two full-time). You will build upon and develop new skills in textile processes, digital design and materials manipulation, learning how to apply this to real design briefs for specific fashion or interiors markets. Development of career awareness and preparation for employment is key to study at this level. You will also explore the important role of trends research and textiles innovation. Modules include: Creative Practice - Market Focus; Creative Practice - Trend and Innovation; Design Your Futures - Creative Careers; Design Matters - Historical and Contemporary Issues.

Level 6 (Year Three full-time). During the final stage of your degree the emphasis is on developing your practice towards your chosen career aspirations. Individually negotiated projects and career plans will culminate in a final graduate collection and showcase, typically at New Designers, London. Modules include: Creative Practice - Making and Projects; Major Design Project; Design Focus (Dissertation); Design Your Futures 3 - Promotion, Planning and Appraisal.

Assessment method

Our experienced programme team boast a diverse range of expertise, from practising designer-makers, to trend forecasting consultants and retail professionals. Our valuable connections with local and national businesses will allow you to access exclusive design resources and a wide range of work experience opportunities. The diversity of teaching will enable you to acquire a wide range of skills associated with textile design, surface pattern and decoration. In keeping with the challenges and pace of the course, you will be assessed through a combination of formative and summative assignments, in order to maintain a level of creative input and develop skills. The majority of assessable work is practical, and will often be assessed through the presentation of an exhibition or portfolio. The remainder of the course will be based on theory, the assignments for which will be delivered through essays, reports or journals.

Level 2 qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy accepted as equivalent.

As part of the application process, you will be required to attend an interview to which you should bring a portfolio of your work.
Applications are encouraged though non-traditional routes. An appropriate level of study will be identified through a portfolio presentation and evidence of professional practice experience at interview. If you have already completed a Foundation degree or HND, you will be considered for direct entry to the appropriate level of the degree course.

Bradford College is committed to delivering quality, affordable degrees. We work hard to cut the cost and not the corners on our undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses. The tuition fee rate per year is fixed for the duration of the course providing there is no break in study. You will not be asked to pay these fees up front, as you should be eligible for loans to cover the tuition fees and assist with living expenses from Student Finance England. However, please ensure that you have made your application and secured funding for your course prior to registration.
