At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Accounting and Mathematics.
Drawing on both theoretical and applied numeracy skills, you will have the opportunity to utilise a range of professional tools, such as Bloomberg and Sage in our dedicated computer laboratory. While both subjects utilise numeracy, students need not be anxious if they have not taken Further Mathematics at A Level.
You will learn to use maths to develop precise and logical arguments, construct rigorous proofs and formulate solutions to new problems. In applying this to real life business, you will learn about the design and use of accounting systems and how they are affected by individuals, organisations, markets and society.
Our computer laboratories provide you with the opportunity to use mathematics on real world data and situations. Should you choose to build on this practical experience you could opt to take a placement year between years two and three of your studies. The placement will increase your awareness of real world organisations and help develop skills which are much sought-after in the graduate job market.
The study of accounting and mathematics will enable you to take a novel approach to problem solving, make critical interpretations of data and text and to demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of the use of professional accounting software programmes. In addition, you will acquire the logical thinking skills of a mathematician, meaning you will be able to find employment in a wide range of sectors. Accounting graduates are highly employable. Your chosen career path could be as diverse as finance, data analytics, chartered management or certified accountant, medical statistics or management consultancy. You might also decide to continue your studies and work towards a postgraduate qualification in accounting or mathematics.
