Course Structure
The first two years of your four-year degree will follow a similar programme to the BSc course, then in your third and fourth years you’ll take your knowledge and understanding further as you select from a greater range of advanced optional modules.

Year 1
Your first year will consist of six compulsory modules, giving you a solid grounding in a wide range of topics. You’ll be introduced to key physics concepts, start developing crucial mathematical skills, and learn about some of the scientific fields that these skills can be applied to. Modules cover topics including light, atoms, mechanics, electromagnetism, the dynamic planet and astrophysics.

Year 2
Building on the foundations laid in year one, your second year will include teaching in intermediate physics topics, mathematics for scientists, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics. You’ll be able to pick from a range of optional modules covering electronics, oceanography, meteorology, geophysics, special relativity and renewable energy.

Year 3
In your third year you’ll hone your abilities and understanding in compulsory topics such as advanced laboratory skills, and conduct an independent research project bringing together the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you’ve developed so far. Optional modules can cover topics such as electricity and magnetism, science communications and climate systems.

Year 4
In your final year you’ll conduct an independent research project at the Master’s level in an area of your choosing. It will be undertaken alongside the taught module Advanced Topics in Physics, as well as several optional advanced modules, covering topics such as modern embedded technology, quantum fluids, a geosciences field course and dynamical meteorology.

In your first year, you’ll be given a foundation in a broad range of physics topics, including quantum mechanics, astrophysics, mathematics and relativity. You’ll build on this basis in your second year with teaching in intermediate physics topics and advanced mathematics, while beginning to customise your degree with a number of optional modules in diverse fields. You can choose to complement your compulsory modules with a focus on electronics, energy, oceans, tectonics or meteorology. In your third year, you’ll have an even greater choice of modules to study alongside advanced physics topics and an independent research project. This MPhys degree culminates in a fourth and final year which allows you to tackle advanced, Masters level topics through modules and a dissertation in cutting-edge physics.

Additional fee information

Tuition fees are reviewed annually and subject to increase. Some fees are regulated by the UK government and will be changed in line with advice from them. Fees for continuing students (i.e. those on courses of greater than one year in length) will normally increase annually. This increase will not exceed 4% or the % increase of the UK Government regulated fee whichever is higher. The fee increase is based on the fee for the year that you register.
