The intensive 2-year LLB allows you to condense 3 years of study into 2 years, thereby accelerating your career development and potentially saving you money. This course covers the key aspects of legal theory and practice at degree level. It equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level position in a wide range of areas requiring a law qualification.
The course is recognised by the legal professional bodies as a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) exempting graduates from the Academic Stage of Training for students seeking to qualify as a solicitor or barrister of England and Wales.
Students who complete the Civil Litigation and Client Care module, plus one of the other four practice-based modules, are eligible for admission as a Graduate Member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx). This opportunity saves graduates one year of additional study. With CILEx Graduate Member status, our students will be able to use the designatory letters: GCILEx (therefore they would be LLB (Hons), GCILEx).
Upon graduation our students who opt for CILEx Graduate Member status could immediately work in a law firm in roles such as a Trainee CILEx Lawyer, Paralegal or Legal Clerk. After completing 3 years of qualifying employment in a law firm, they will be admitted as a Fellow of CILEx (FCILEx) and a Chartered Legal Executive. Fellows can represent clients in court if they qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive Advocate. They can also dual qualify as a Solicitor, without having to complete a two-year training contract.
Our LLB is one of only a handful in England and Wales which provides students with this option. Usually membership takes an additional year of study. So our LLB students who decide to pursue a career as a chartered legal executive can benefit from this very unique advantage!
This degree is clearly a natural choice for applicants considering a career as a solicitor, barrister, chartered legal executive or paralegal. Our Law graduates will hone a number of invaluable employability skills, such as: intellectual independence; reflective self-management; awareness of principles and values of law, justice and ethics; an understanding of legal theories that can be applied globally; problem-solving; excellent written and oral communication. Therefore there is a diverse array of employment opportunities for Law graduates in areas such as education, journalism, public relations, business and enterprise, or across the public sector.
Students complete 6 modules per year (which includes a summer term). Each module is 30 credits. See provider course page for full list of modules.
Family Law and Practice is an optional module available at Level 6 that requires a systematic understanding of the following key aspects of family law and practice: termination of a marriage; dissolution of a civil partnership; the financial consequences of such termination or dissolution; domestic violence and molestation; the Children Act 1989 and private law; financial consequences of a relationship breakdown for an unmarried family/couple. This module examines the above key aspects of family law, to enable students to critically discuss the issues and to provide practical advice and assistance within the context of a specific legal situation.
The Legal Internship is an optional module at Level 6 that creates a framework to help students gain the type of skills and experience required to undertake legal work in contemporary organisations. The module helps students to gain understanding and experience of real life legal practice in the workplace. The skills gained provide tangible workplace advantage.
Students are required to undertake 200 hours of work experience:
1. Students may work part-time throughout the term; or
2. Students may work full-time over the summer vacation
A learning agreement will be agreed upon between the student, designated employer, and LSBM. This will be based upon the type of legal experience desired from the internship. Students are expected to become fully involved in the operational work of an organisation and to be received as a team member in a work situation. The internship can take the form of wide experience in a small business, or departmental work within a larger organisation. In either situation, the emphasis will be on a relationship which has positive outcomes for both the student and the placement employer.
Optional modules are subject to demand.
Modules are assessed in different ways, e.g. essays, reports, portfolios, presentations and examinations.
