Civil engineers shape the world – literally. Responsible for planning, designing and building society’s essential infrastructure, they take a leading role in maintaining the quality of our personal and professional lives, managing a vast range of construction projects, from bridges and buildings to transport links and sports stadiums.

This professionally accredited integrated masters course enables you to progress from an undergraduate degree right through to a Master’s level qualification in four years of full-time study. The course fully satisfies the educational base for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. Graduates will be ready to take a leading role in the civil engineering profession.

Coventry is home to the National Centre for Advanced Construction Technologies (ACT-UK) and offers cutting-edge facilities, including The Simulation Centre, the most advanced interactive people training and development centre in the UK.

Your studies are underpinned by three core course themes, which are carefully balanced across all years of the course, centred on specific technical knowledge, construction practice and skills development through group project work.

You should gain an insight into the full breadth of design and construction disciplines that collaborate in the multidisciplinary construction industry. One distinct advantage is the benefit of practical experience brought to the course by part-time students already working in industry, who will study the course alongside you.

Throughout the four years of study, we will cover the principles and practice of civil engineering within a global context, including engineering analysis, structural analysis and design, highways and surveying, construction and project management, water and ground engineering.

Following your second year, you will have an option to apply for a one-year professional work placement or study abroad in a partner institution. Past students have undertaken placements working with contractors, design consultants and local authorities, including Balfour Beatty Construction, Mott Macdonald, Severn Trent Water, Interserve Project Services, Warwickshire County Council, Atkins and Morgan Sindall.

The third year aims to bring students to the level necessary to enter professional practice as an Incorporated Civil Engineer; reflecting both the latest advances and research work in the subject together with the contemporary jobs market. Within your individual project, you will be expected to carry out detailed research into a technical aspect from the course with the help of an experienced supervisor. Project topics typically relate to research areas of supervisors and take the form of experimental projects largely relating to structural, material or geomaterial research.

In the fourth year, you should gain a deeper understanding of technical concepts in the modelling and design of engineering systems, studying subjects such as bridge engineering, construction contracts, structural dynamics, project and system management and advanced structural analysis and design.
