This expert-led degree teaches you how to use the latest solid modelling, rendering and product simulation tools to create and evaluate your designs, as well as giving you an in-depth understanding of engineering principles and tools.
You will be able to use an excellent array of facilities including 3D scanners and printers, modern manufacturing & technical workshops and cutting-edge prototyping facilities, all held within our Innovation Centre.
You can spend year 3 on a work placement, gaining a minimum of 30 weeks’ experience in a relevant industry. Our students have previously had placements with Bentley Motors, Mercedes AMG Petronas and GE (General Electric) to name but a few. This proves invaluable in helping to enhance your employment prospects. You will be enrolled onto the 4-year degree, but can opt out of the placement year.
Studying this degree will enable you to move into job roles such as a business development agent, construction project manager, design and development engineers, mechanical engineers and more.
Accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) through the Engineering Council, this expert-led degree teaches you how to use the latest solid modelling, rendering and product simulation tools to create and evaluate your designs, as well as giving you an in-depth understanding of engineering principles and tools.
You'll study a number of units including Design Communication, Engineering Principles A, Design Engineering Projects 1, Materials with Practice, Electrical and Electronic Principles, Team Project, Manufacturing and Engineering Materials, Engineering Design Tools, Engineering Simulation, Design Engineering Projects 2, Management and Commercialisation, Mechanical and Electronic System Design, Business Development along with a 30 week work placement in your third year.

Apprenticeships: We recognise the transferable knowledge and skills gained through apprenticeships and welcome applications from students with the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Mature applicants: We recognise that mature applicants may have a wealth of experience rather than formal qualifications, so we’ll consider your application on these merits if it’s included in your application. You’ll need to apply to BU in the usual way through UCAS and you may be invited to an interview to discuss your suitability for the course based on the experience you tell us about in your application.
