Our Physics degree here at Aberystwyth University is accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP). Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, but one which makes significant contributions to modern society, with theoretical breakthroughs feeding into new sciences and fostering modern technologies. The concepts of physics form the basis of most scientific language and the subject finds its way into most modern science and technology, enhancing the scope for your future employment prospects. Physics has been taught at Aberystwyth since its foundation and it continues to be an innovative learning experience for all. This degree placed in the top 10 in the UK for student satisfaction in the subject area of physics and astronomy. In choosing this subject you will be taught by experts in their field. Upon completion of your degree you will have accreditation by the Institute of Physics. Our researchers are involved in the current European Space Agency ExoMars 2020 Project and engineering low dimensional materials such as graphene.
This is a fascinating and commercially important field of research. Throughout this degree, you will be introduced to: classical and modern physics, computational and experimental physics, dynamics, astronomy, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, numerical methods and condensed matter. Some modules may also include training and practical advice in career planning and skills development. Students wishing to study through the medium welsh may do so with our Welsh-medium modules. Our students learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practicals, individual and group-based project work. We assess our students through coursework, presentations, lab reports, lab diaries and examinations. You will be assigned a personal tutor, who can help with any difficulties you might have with the degree or with university life.
Employability is embedded across all our teaching and ethics. We instil these skills to our students: research and data analysis, mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, independent working, time management, organisation, self-motivation, communication and teamworking. The ability to discuss concepts with peers, accommodate different viewpoints, meet deadlines and communicate ideas in a clear, concise manner in both written and oral form are highly desirable skills in industry. You are encouraged to contact the University’s Careers Service in relation to work experience opportunities. Year in Employment Scheme (YES) and GO Wales are administered by the Career Service which works with local businesses to create paid work placements for students. This helps you gain valuable work experience which will enhance your CV.
This degree will allow you to pursue a career in engineering, research or development. The skills you will learn are highly pertinent to employers. Typical careers include: medical physicist, radiation protection practitioner, research scientist, systems developer, product development, technical author and meteorologist. In addition, you will acquire transferable skills, such as problem-solving abilities, needed for success in a wider range of careers.

The following entry points are available for this course:
|UCAS Tariff||112 points||With B in Physics and B in Mathematics.|
|A level||BBC||With B in Physics and B in Mathematics.|
|Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)||DMM||With specified subject and B in A level Mathematics.|
|Access to HE Diploma||Pass in Access qualification in a relevant subject with Merit in 50% of units at level 3.|
|International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme||28 points||With 5 points in Physics and 5 points in Mathematics at Higher Level.|
|Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (first teaching September 2015)||Aberystwyth University welcomes the Welsh Baccalaureate as a valuable qualification in its own right and considers completion of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate to be equivalent to an A level grade.|
Applicants are selected on their individual merits and offers can vary. We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements, and all qualifications that you have already gained, or are working towards, will be considered when reviewing your application. We have an inclusive policy which recognises a broad range of qualifications. The entry requirements listed here represent typical offers for some of the most popular qualifications taken by applicants. We still use the UCAS tariff to determine whether you have met the terms of our offer, so whatever qualifications you are taking, provided these are included in the UCAS tariff and provided you meet the overall points total (and any specific subject requirements) you may still receive an offer. This means that if your course requires 3 A levels at BBB, we will accept other grade combinations that are equivalent to the same number of tariff points. For example A levels ABC and AAD equate to 120 UCAS tariff points). Applicants studying a mixture of qualifications (e.g. A Level with BTEC) are also warmly welcomed. If you cannot find the qualification(s) that you are studying (or have previously studied) please contact our Undergraduate Admissions Office (Telephone: +44 (0)1970 622021; Email: email@example.com) for advice on your eligibility and details of the typical offer you are likely to receive.
A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Level 3 KS/FS Communication may be acceptable in lieu of GCSE English or Welsh. For this degree scheme minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics is also required. GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy is acceptable in lieu of GCSE Mathematics.
