Undergraduate

Summary
The world of sports coaching is ever-evolving and with it the evolution of the sports coaching professional. No longer is it enough just to have a passion for sport. Today’s coach also needs industry recognised qualifications and relevant work experience & professional practice. The Foundation Degree (FdA) in Sports Coaching & Physical Education, delivered by SCL and validated by De Montfort University, delivers on all of these.

Why choose this course
De Montfort University & SCL’s FdA in Sports Coaching and Physical Education is specially designed to create the next generation of professional sports coaches. This employer-designed foundation degree aligns learning outcomes with the needs of the employer in the sports and leisure sectors, as identified by one of the country's leading employers of sports coaches and children's activity professionals, SCL.

The course is made up of three core components: Academic Studies, Work Experience & Professional Practice and Vocational Studies. Throughout the programme students will receive bespoke guidance to support them through their own goals & targets giving them the best possible chance of moving onto their desired career upon completion of the course. This course is ideal for those who want to live at home during their time as a student and live within a daily commuting distance of Surrey Heath.

SCL is both an education provider and an employer of over 2,000 sports coaches and teachers which gives SCL valuable insight into what skills and experience are currently in demand when employing staff.

No other foundation degree offers you: a high quality education programme, an employer-led syllabus, delivered in partnership with De Montfort University, guaranteed work placements with SCL, excellent progression opportunities and great value for money. In addition to this SCL is paying for all their students to gain additional vocational qualifications to support their success and transition into the work place. Students will be able to achieve 1st4Sport Level 2 Award in Multi Skills Development in Sport, 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in supporting the delivery of PE and School Sport and a Level 3 Award in Education & Training which is an initial teaching qualification to enable you to begin to teach in further education.

After the course
Students can explore the following career progression routes; stay within education and complete a third year full honours degree, then a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and go on to become a teacher. Or, on completion of the FdA, students can go into assisting the teaching of PE & school sports in further education institutions or go into community sports management roles like activity coaches within the community, a children’s holiday activity leader, self-employed sports coach etc. Finally, students may opt to complete additional, single sport coaching qualifications (available through SCL's network of partnerships with sports academies, at additional cost to the learner*) and move towards a career in performance coaching & management, for example as a coach at a professional sports club.
