Course summary

This 3-year LLB provides a pathway to a career in law. It covers the key aspects of legal theory and practice at degree level. It equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level position in a wide range of areas requiring a law qualification.

The course is recognised by the legal professional bodies as a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) exempting graduates from the Academic Stage of Training for students seeking to qualify as a solicitor or barrister of England and Wales.

Students who complete the Civil Litigation and Client Care module, plus one of the other four practice-based modules, are eligible for admission as a Graduate Member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx). This opportunity saves graduates one year of additional study. With CILEx Graduate Member status, our students will be able to use the designatory letters: GCILEx (therefore they would be LLB (Hons), GCILEx).

Upon graduation our students who opt for CILEx Graduate Member status could immediately work in a law firm in roles such as a Trainee CILEx Lawyer, Paralegal or Legal Clerk. After completing 3 years of qualifying employment in a law firm, they will be admitted as a Fellow of CILEx (FCILEx) and a Chartered Legal Executive. Fellows can represent clients in court if they qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive Advocate. They can also dual qualify as a Solicitor, without having to complete a two-year training contract.

Our LLB is one of only a handful in England and Wales which provides students with this option. Usually membership takes an additional year of study. So our LLB students who decide to pursue a career as a chartered legal executive can benefit from this very unique advantage!

This degree is a natural choice for applicants considering a career as a solicitor, barrister, chartered legal executive or paralegal. There are a diverse array of employment opportunities for Law graduates in areas such as education, journalism, public relations, business and enterprise, or across the public sector.

Modules

There are two semesters each year. Students complete 2 x 30 credit modules each semester, enabling students to concentrate on fewer modules at a time. For a full list of modules, see provider's course page.

Featured Modules:
Public Law is a compulsory module at Level 5 that covers UK constitutional and administrative law. It explores the nature, functions and fundamental principles of the UK’s constitution, and the impact of EU Law and the European Convention on Human Rights (and Human Rights Act 1998) on the UK’s constitution. This is followed by an analysis of how the Human Rights 1998 has been applied by UK courts. The module concludes with a detailed study of how judicial review can be used to challenge the decision-making duties and powers of public bodies.

Company and Partnership Law and Practice is an optional Level 6 module that requires a systematic understanding of the following key aspects of the legal system: financial and fiscal implications in choice of business medium; formation, management and termination of a partnership; formation of a limited company and implications of incorporation; convening and conducting of shareholder meetings; role and responsibilities of directors and other company officers; amending a company’s constitution; issuing share capital and company borrowing; company administration and disclosure requirements; corporate insolvency. This module examines the above key aspects of company and partnership law, to enable students to critically discuss the issues and to provide practical advice and assistance within the context of a specific legal situation.

Optional modules are subject to demand.
