The foundation year will provide an introduction to information technology tools, mathematical skills and programming concepts. You will then progress to discover data modelling, web design, E-commerce and applied graphics to name a few fields. This course will help you attain the knowledge and understanding to make a substantial contribution in the workplace. Our enthusiastic staff will teach you through the medium of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practicals and individual or group based project work.

Employability skills are the core values of our degree. As part of your degree you will be required to take part in a residential weekend where you and other students will have work in teams to solve problems. This activity will encourage and improve your skills in: communication, analysis, time management, independent and group-based working, organisation, implementation, research and technical skills.

Take advantage of the Careers Advisory Service at Aberystwyth for assistance and advice with CV writing, interview technique and application writing. You can also use this service to organise relevant work experience to give insight into your preferred industry. You can enhance your employability skills by taking part in the YES (Year in Employment Scheme) which is managed by our Careers department.

Our degree which is made up of a wide range of interesting modules prepares you for a variety of careers in fields such as communications and networking, web development, IT consultancy and management, systems analysis and development, computer sales and marketing and even education.

It is worth mentioning that 98.5% of UK/EU undergraduates from the Department of Computer Science who graduated in 2016 were in professional level jobs or graduate level further study six months after graduating (DLHE 2017). The skills which will be acquired from this course are highly sought after by employers in computer science-related industries.

GCSE/National 4/National 5 A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Level 3 KS/FS Communication may be acceptable in lieu of GCSE English or Welsh. For this degree scheme minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics is also required.

This course, which includes a foundation year, is specifically designed to provide an alternative route into higher education to study one of our degrees in a relevant subject area. You may be eligible for this course if you are qualified to enter higher education but do not have the relevant formal qualifications at A level (or equivalent), if you come from a non-traditional academic background, or if you have not yet achieved your full academic potential. Your background education, experience and motivation for the subject will all be taken into account when we consider your application for this course.

Fee information: Based on the latest information available to us, for new Home/EU students enrolled on full-time undergraduate courses starting in 2018, Aberystwyth University currently intends to charge a tuition fee of £9,000 for the academic year 2018/19. Welsh government is still to confirm arrangements for 2019/20 onwards, which means that for students starting in 2018/19 or after, tuition fees may rise for any successive years of study, mapped according to any inflation-linked maximum tuition fee permitted by the Welsh Government. These increases would also apply for the proportional fees charged for Year Abroad and Year in Industry. We will inform all applicants and students of the fee levels for 2019/20 and any inflation-linked increases for successive years of study as soon as confirmation is received from Welsh Government, and will publish updates on the Aberystwyth University website. Costs not included in the tuition fee: The academic provision of the University includes certain elements of study away from Aberystwyth. These involve activities such as field trips in science degrees and visits to theatres, galleries and museums in humanities-based courses. The additional costs of such activities are not included in the overall University fee and you should, therefore, note the need to budget for them.
