Child nursing is caring for children and young people with a wide range of needs in a variety of healthcare settings. From newborns to adolescents, you’ll not only be supporting children but their families and carers during what can be an emotional and unpredictable time in their lives.

We’re looking for people who are child-focused, want to keep children safe, make a difference and improve lives, who are caring, courageous and compassionate. We’ll help you develop the qualities that define a University of Leeds child nurse – a problem solver, decision maker, innovator and an advocate for your patients and their parents and carers.

At the University of Leeds, we’re proud to offer outstanding teaching from some of the most inspirational lecturers in adult nursing, in fact, our teaching has been rated Gold by the Teaching Excellence Framework. This exciting three year honours course is designed to develop nurses with the skills and knowledge to work in the dynamic, changing health care environment to manage change and develop critical and analytical skills, as well as clinical skills to practice as a child nurse.

We have stimulating placements in a variety of settings with two of the best teaching hospitals in Europe: St James Teaching Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, with close links to Leeds Children’s hospital. We offer much more choice - and a range of specialist placements including neurology, paediatric A&E as well as children's medicine and surgery.

Course details

Modules

Year 1 is the trans-disciplinary first year where shared and inter-professional learning takes place with other nursing and healthcare students. You’ll explore the core issues required to become a healthcare professional, anatomy and physiology, as well as being introduced to specific aspects of child nursing.

Year 2 Looks at the normal development of the child and young person and chronic conditions affecting these age groups. You’ll explore health promotion and health education, develop understanding of issues related to safeguarding children, debate legal and ethical concepts related to nursing and develop the skills for evaluating the research evidence underpinning clinical practice.

Year 3 focuses on the acutely or critically ill child. You’ll examine critical thinking, decision-making skills and leadership skills and will be supported in making the transition to the role of qualified nurse. A 10,000-word research dissertation develops your ability to use, summarise and communicate research evidence and apply it to your professional practice. There is also an optional module which offers the opportunity to undertake a clinical placement abroad.

Clinical placements are an integral part of your training.

Assessment method

Assessment

We use a range of assessment methods, including essays, posters/ leaflets, practical skills examinations and multiple choice questions.

You’ll need to demonstrate the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques, as well as your emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
You’ll need to produce work that is typically both evaluative and creative and show you can conduct independent, in-depth enquiry within the discipline. You need to be able to draw on a wide variety of material and be able to evaluate and critique received opinion.

International applicants

International Admissions Process: All applicants for Nursing programmes must meet entry requirements, are required to be interviewed and undertake a short entry test. Interviews may be conducted via SKYPE and will be arranged with the applicant for a specific date and time. For nursing the test is a numeracy test. Tests for Nursing will be taken remotely, but under observation, immediately following the interview. Following applicant shortlisting by the School of Healthcare Admission Tutors, applicants will be invited to undertake an interview and entry test (subject to relevant entry criteria attainment as identified below): The numeracy test for Nursing and Midwifery is set around the European metric system of measurement and calculation.

For 2018 onwards, candidates will need to have studied the Health Sciences or Health Studies programmes and have 6 science focused modules.

The remaining level 3 credits must be at merit level or above. For Access to Higher Education Diplomas completed before September 2014, applicants are required to have 45 credits at level 3 at distinction and include 12 credits from biology. We strongly advise you to contact the School to discuss the suitability of your chosen Access course. We consider Access Courses to be suitable for mature applicants (21 plus) who have been out of full-time education and have had no previous access to higher education.
