‚ÄčThe Master of Research (MRes) programme provides high quality and professionally relevant training in research methods and analysis for health, psychology and biomedical science graduates.

Through the taught modules students will develop their research skills, including critically appraising literature, developing research proposals, laboratory techniques, project management, presenting findings (through oral, written and digital media) and applying for funding. Students will be introduced to a wide range of methodologies and practical techniques relevant to their discipline. Training will be provided in research governance and ethical procedures to ensure students are prepared for work as professional researchers.

Students will conduct two substantial research studies in a topic of their choice, supervised by experienced members of academic staff. These studies will be written up in the form of journal articles and will form a substantial component of the credits for the MRes award.

This award prepares you for a future in research and progression on to PhD studies.

Course details

Modules

Students will complete the following modules over the course of one full year (full-time) or two years (part-time)

Research Methods and Design (30 credits)

Biomedical Science Pathway

This will include the review and analysis of contemporary research within the field of Biomedical Science. Consideration will be given to ethical issues, codes of practice and research governance that underpins research. Students will learn about how research findings are prepared for publication quality manuscripts as well as the peer review process. Additionally students will gain an understanding of research funding that will equip them to prepare research proposals.

Psychology Pathway

The qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake Masters level research will be taught. Content will include the philosophical underpinnings of research methodologies, research ethics and conducting systematic literature reviews. A wide range of research methodologies will be covered, such as randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, experimental design, interview and focus group designs. Students will learn about complex statistical analysis as well as a range of advanced qualitative analyses, such as discourse analysis and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

Practical Techniques in Research (20 credits)

Biomedical Science Pathway

This module will enable students to critically analyse contemporary research systems used in Biomedical Sciences research, including the validation of methodologies. Students will examine the principles, development and application of existing and emerging research methodologies and will have the opportunity to undertake practical work to familiarise themselves with a number of essential research techniques.

Psychology Pathway

This module will provide a detailed understanding and practical experience of a diverse group of specialist research methods used in psychology. Students will be introduced to a range of techniques for conducting psychological research. Through a literature review students will demonstrate a critical understanding of the strengths and limitations of a chosen technique(s). Students will complete a practical report to demonstrate their ability to develop and run a psychological study using advanced specialist techniques (of their choice).

Experimental Techniques will include: Eprime/ opensesamie, Electroencephalograph (EEG) Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) and EyeTracking. Survey and qualitative techniques will include: utilizing psychometric measures, Qualtrics software for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Nvivo for qualitative analysis observation techniques and visual methods.

Research Skills (20 credits)

This module will provide experience and understanding of the broader issues associated with the research process such as planning a research project, research governance and sustainability, presenting findings at conference and through the media, publishing papers and applying for funding. A series of workshops have been designed to meet the criteria specified by the UK Grad Programme Joint Statement of Requirements for Research Students, to ensure graduates have a thorough grounding in all aspects of the research process.

Dissertation (110 credits)

Finally, students will complete a dissertation proposal (10 credits) and associated ethics application. This will culminate in completion of two independent research studies that are written up for the 100 credit dissertation module. The dissertation will involve all the elements of the research process from the design of the study, data collection, analysis of findings and write up in the format of a journal article. Students will be supervised by two members of staff to complete their dissertation. Students will be matched with appropriate staff members who have expertise in the chosen topic and/or methodology.

Assessment method

Each module has its own form of assessment. The majority of modules are assessed via coursework, including research reviews, reports, essays and presentations. The dissertation will be written up in the format of two journal articles.


Entry requirements

A good honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) in a health or social science subject is normally required. However, applicants with relevant professional experience or qualifications are welcomed and will be considered individually. Selection Procedure: Once your application has been received you will be invited for a short meeting with the Programme Director to discuss the course in more detail and consider which is the most appropriate programme route to suit your background and future needs.
