Our Mathematics degree helps you to discover a subject that is fundamentally important to modern society. We create a friendly, open and welcoming environment in which students reach their full mathematical potential. The foundation year is aimed at those who lack the adequate entry qualifications in mathematics. The foundation year covers the essential mathematics to allow students to continue to an honours degree in mathematics.

Mathematics has been taught at Aberystwyth since 1872, so that the department builds on over 140 years of teaching excellence, employing lecturers who are committed teachers and internationally-recognised researchers. All lecturers in the Department of Mathematics are qualified to PhD level and are research active. By studying with us you will uncover a discipline that combines the identification and analysis of shapes and patterns with data collation and calculation. The department also offers several modules which are taught through the medium of Welsh.

As a student in Aberystwyth, you will be introduced to mathematics and statistics. This is broadly equivalent to A-level Mathematics. On successful completion of your first year, you will progress to discover further Mathematics. Some of these topics may include algebra, calculus, coordinate and vector geometry, probability, dynamics and hydrodynamics, regression and anova. We aim to create a friendly, open and welcoming environment in which students can reach their full mathematical potential. This degree is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practicals. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and examinations. You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues.

This course will develop your understanding of a wide range of theories and processes in Mathematics. You will develop your written and oral communication skills and your ability to work independently and as part of a group. Some of the skills you will develop include: research, data analysis, enhanced mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, information technology, independent working, time management, organisation, meeting deadlines and self-motivation. You will enhance your ability to express ideas, communicate information clearly and concisely, accommodate other viewpoints and come to a decision as part of a team. This degree scheme is designed to cultivate transferable skills, including numeracy and reasoning, to ensure that our graduates are attractive to employers in a wide range of fields. Work experience will greatly improve your CV and make you more attractive to employers. You are encouraged to contact the Careers Advisory Service in relation to YES (Year in Employment Scheme) and Go Wales for assistance in securing work placements alongside your degree.

This Mathematics degree will be particularly valuable in employment situations, which require specialist numerical skills and logical and analytical thought. These include career paths such as statistical analysis and computational statistics, teaching, aeronautical engineering, accountancy and banking, risk analysis and actuarial work, financial management and investment analysis and information technology.
