Build your knowledge and understanding of creative design processes, with the option to top-up to a full degree at university.

Applying your learning to Art & Design specialisms, you will be actively encouraged to make relevant links to areas within the creative industries.

The design of this qualification allows students to choose between the art practice pathway and the Graphic design pathway

You will study two qualifications, receiving a nationally recognised Higher Education qualification at the end of each year - Higher National Certificate (first year) and Higher National Diploma (second year).

Course details


During the first year studying the HNC, you will study a mixture of core and specialist units. These include Professional Development, Contextual Studies, Pearson Individual Set Project, Techniques and Processes. Media Practices or Typography,
Material practices or Graphic Design Practices and Printmaking.

Assessment method

Each unit is assessed on completion (there will be formative assessment tutorials and critiques. Grade profiles will be calculated in relation to credit values and this will inform definitive grading for the respective levels of the programme.

All project work will be assessed. This will take the form of verbal and written formative assessment during each project. It may also take the form of group ‘crits’ in which students are encouraged to assess their own work and the work of others in the front of the group.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) PPP BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in a relevant subject.
Access to HE Diploma M: 45 credits

You will need to have achieved one of the following: Foundation Diploma in a relevant subject, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in a relevant subject, A-Level at Grade C or above in a creative subject.

You will also be required to present a portfolio of artwork to demonstrate your commitment and suitability for our course.

In order to progress to the second year HND, you will need to successfully complete the HNC in the first year.
