The HND Computing: Video Game Design and Production provides a programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the video game and software development sectors. The course is designed to develop a range of skills, knowledge and experiences to prepare you for an exciting career in this constantly expanding industry.

This bespoke HND offers expert tutorial support, provided to help develop your educational and vocational abilities as well as the personal and professional qualities and attitudes required to adapt to the demands of the video game market.

What will I study?
In studying this HND you will cover a range of practical, industry focused skills to prepare you for the transition into an exciting career. Each fun and engaging project will be supported with indirect, direct and embedded learning, professional consideration and planning as well as continued, high-level English and maths. Example units include:

  • Computing Research Project

  • Business Intelligence (e.g. demonstrate the use of business intelligence, discuss impact, etc.)

  • Games Engine & Scripting (e.g. use a game design document)

  • Game Design Theory (e.g. assess the principles of game design, create an original design document, etc.)

  • Games Development (fine-tuning game concepts and basic designs in to finished playable games)

  • Prototyping (plan a prototype and develop multiple iterations)

  • Virtual & Augmented Reality Development

  • Application Program Interfaces (use an API to design an application)

Projects will be supported by tutor led instruction to help students design, develop, build and publish games and applications, peer support, lectures, seminars, conferences, tech shows, exhibitions , 1-2-1 support and game & app development sessions.

Successful completion of the HND here at college. Completion of both years will enable you to gain a wide variety of specialist and practical skills in areas ranging from concept design, pitching, software & game development, project management, teamwork, quality assurance & testing to publishing, marketing and community management. In addition to great opportunities, new insights and transferable experiences, you will have built a personal and professional portfolio of completed, explainable and demonstrable projects.

You'll then be set for an exciting career in the video game industry, graduate with this HND and you'll have the perfect blend of technical know-how and industry skills to seek employment. A wide range of careers are available to you such as; Games Designer, Software Developer, Computer Programmer, Animators, Audio Engineers, QA Tester, Technical Support Specialist and more. Alternatively, you'll have the chance to further your studies by using your HND to progress to the final year of an honours degree at university.
