Global Challenges will explore the questions associated with how the citizens of tomorrow will face, analyse and manage the inevitable challenges related to ‘wicked problems’ of our time. These themes will form the central framework of the degree programme, taking an in-depth look at issues such as climate change, migration, terrorism, aging populations, food and water scarcity, poverty and countless others. As well as undertaking the core spine of degree, you will have the choice to follow one of four pathways that specialize in an area of Global Challenges. These complementary strands have been selected not only because they all represent pressing issues faced by the international community, but also because of Brunel’s existing and emerging expertise in these areas.

With the Professional Practice option, placements are available and a key part of the course. Allowing you to practically apply what is taught, throughout a number of different industries.

Global Innovation: This strand will provide students with compound skills and knowledge to successfully develop innovative and sustainable products within the global economy.

Global innovation is required in response to the growing integration of economies and societies around the world to deliver customised products and services for diverse and dynamically changing range of stakeholders. Problems today cannot be solved by technology alone, but demand considerations from all aspects of the human society. Innovation needs to be achieved through interaction of science, technology and art to solve a real-world problem manifested within a social and environmental context. A product is created from the very birth of an idea to the design, modelling and manufacturing, with involvement of stakeholders through the whole process. This involves transdisciplinary studies for negotiation of knowledge across multiple fields including materials, manufacturing, computing and electronics, assisted by social science, business and management. The Global Innovation strand of the Global Challenges BASc will take students through all important development phases to gain essential creative and innovative skills. Students will learn how to utilise knowledge and skills from different fields to produce effective and sustainable innovation in a holistic manner. The study is forward-looking, empowering students with the education they require to work in an increasingly globalised and automated world.

Modules

All students on the BASc Global Challenges will engage with the content of the Core Spine through a study block that has been specifically designed for this purpose. If you choose the Global Innovation strand, you will also specialize in a number of tailored scientific and non-scientific modules. Typical modules include Year 1: Introduction to Global Challenges, Addressing Global Challenges, Introduction to Global Innovation, Fundamental Scientific and Engineering Principles and Methodology, Global Innovation Investigation Year 2: Addressing Contemporary Global Challenges, Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering, Global Innovation Integration, Transdisciplinary Knowledge Integration and Negotiation Year 3:Arts and Sciences Dissertation in Global Challenges, Global Challenges in Practice, Transdisciplinary Global Innovation in Multiple Representations, Global Innovation Management
