'Real world' projects are integrated across all levels of this BSc Building Services Engineering degree.
Modern living depends upon the engineering services that are an integral part of buildings, and these systems consume a significant percentage of the energy used in the UK. Building services engineers operate as part of a professional team alongside architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors and other construction professionals to ensure that buildings continue to function efficiently while de-carbonising the energy supply. They need to be technically competent and practical in outlook, but also good communicators as they give advice to a wide range of people.
This programme, which has been developed in partnership with practising professionals, helps you gain the skills required to design complicated building engineering systems that can control internal environmental conditions and minimise energy use, such as the heating, lighting, power, lifts, ventilation, water and utilities, as well as managing their installation, commissioning and maintenance.
Projects are integrated at all levels of the degree, with materials and supervision provided by employers so you can replicate real-life scenarios in your work. After your second year, you may take up a year’s paid work placement with a building services engineering consultant or contractor (subject to finding a suitable work placement).

During level 4, students gain the basic knowledge and theory of the Building Services Engineering discipline. They gain an introduction to construction technology, engineering principles, science and materials, and mathematics. Students will also undertake a building services design project and get involved in exciting collaborative interdisciplinary activities, as well as becoming skilled in academic and digital literacy.
During level 5, students further their knowledge and skills in mechanical and electrical engineering as well as mathematics, relating the key principles to building services systems. This culminates in a major practical building services design project, as well as an interdisciplinary project which incorporates building information management (BIM), and students are encouraged to use industry standard building modelling software. Students also study management techniques for the construction and building services industries further and are introduced to engineering research methods.
At the conclusion of level 5 students will have the option to take up a year's paid work placement with a building services engineering consultant or contractor.
During level 6, students focus on the issues of sustainability in building services design as well as environmental analysis. Again these key concepts are utilised to complete integrative multi-disciplinary design projects. Students will also further their learning in the area of project management techniques as well as undertaking a major engineering research project (dissertation).
Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules. Additionally, option modules may be offered subject to meeting minimum student numbers.

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose.
All students perform differently depending on the type of assessment they are asked to do, and so a variety of assessment methods are used. These include exams (open and closed book), coursework (projects, technical reports, reviews, etc), and presentations (individual and group).
Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via our virtual learning environment, face-to-face or in writing. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

We are looking for students who are keen to learn new skills and develop those they already possess.
