Develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to design and produce integrated computer systems solutions well suited to the constantly evolving needs of industry.
The course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our BEng (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other engineering, maths and physics foundation year students, then move on to the degree.
You develop knowledge and understanding of both engineering principles and practice, with a firm foundation of science and mathematics. This is applied specifically to the design of computer and network systems to meet real-world challenges.
In the foundation year, you’ll study the fundamental maths, science and engineering principles that you’ll need at undergraduate level, and apply them to a range of different topics. You’ll learn through many of the same techniques used on the degree course, and familiarise yourself with Sheffield Hallam and its facilities — ensuring that you’re ready to hit the ground running.
You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your third and fourth years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career.
Previous students have worked in businesses such as IBM, CISCO, Citrix, Barracuda networks, BT Exact, PlusNet and Proact. Typical placement roles include designing and building computer network infrastructure for clients, developing embedded networked solutions for consumer electronics and commissioning and support of computer systems and network infrastructure.
To provide you with the skills you'll require when you graduate, you work on real-world projects - both individually and in a group - to design, develop and test computer system solutions suitable for the needs of industrial partners.
