Mathematics and Physics, at Aberystwyth, offers you the opportunity to combine the study of two closely-related disciplines in a coherent and structured format. The Mathematics and Physics degree covers the core elements of each subject area, supplemented by a choice of elective specialities, and you will gain a firm knowledge of the mathematical and numerical skills that underpin our understanding of physical concepts and natural phenomena. You will be taught in lectures and problem-solving classes with good staff/student ratios in the highest-rated department for Mathematics in Wales. Graduates of this degree are in significant demand across many industries that include science, engineering, technology and finance.
Mathematics and Physics have been taught at Aberystwyth since the foundation of the university in 1872, making the university the first in Wales to teach these subjects. Investment of several million pounds in teaching and research has ensured that we continue to provide a stimulating learning environment for a growing body of mathematics and physics students from all over the world.
In the first year, you will take core modules in mathematical analysis, algebra and calculus, classical and modern physics, dynamics, and computational and experimental physics. Optional modules will allow you to direct your studies per your preferences. In the second year, you will take linear algebra, thermal physics, mathematical physics, and quantum mechanics as core modules. A broad range of optional modules allows for further specialism. In the third year, your core modules include condensed matter, electromagnetism, and atoms and molecules and your mathematics modules will be drawn from a wide choice. You will also undertake a project to investigate a problem of an experimental, theoretical, data analysis, instrumentation or computer modelling nature under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. The Departments of Mathematics and Physics are at the forefront of Welsh-medium provision in these subjects at higher education level in Wales.
This course will develop your understanding of a wide range of theories and processes in Mathematics and Physics and will teach you to apply the techniques you have learned to solve problems and explore research questions. You will develop your written and oral communication skills and your ability to work independently and as part of a group. Some of the skills you will develop include: research, data analysis, enhanced mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, information technology, independent working, time management, organisation, meeting deadlines and self-motivation. You will enhance your ability to express ideas, communicate information clearly and concisely, accommodate other viewpoints and come to a decision as part of a team. The Mathematical and Theoretical Physics degree scheme is designed to cultivate transferable skills, including numeracy and reasoning, to ensure that our graduates are attractive to employers in a wide range of fields.
A degree in Mathematics and Physics will be particularly valuable in employment situations which require specialist numerical skills and logical and analytical thought. These include career paths such as accountancy and banking, risk analysis and actuarial work, finance management, investment analysis, information technology, laboratory and technical work, and research and development.

A minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) English or Welsh is a requirement for entry to all our degree schemes. Level 3 KS/FS Communication may be acceptable in lieu of GCSE English or Welsh. For this degree scheme minimum grade C or grade 4 pass in GCSE (or equivalent) Mathematics is also required. GCSE Mathematics-Numeracy is acceptable in lieu of GCSE Mathematics.
