This degree focuses on modern history, from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, paying particular attention to the themes of historical change and struggle. Questioning traditional approaches to history, we draw from other disciplines such as politics and cultural studies in our exploration of historical themes. You will focus on not just what happened, but also on the mechanics of history as a discipline, its production, and its social and political uses. During your Contemporary History degree you will explore ongoing global issues such as how certain states become dominant powers, and why racism has taken different forms around the world. You will also examine why some groups are marginalised in the telling of history, looking at how they can reclaim and tell their own histories, and how we expose the historic problems in the structures and systems that shape contemporary society. Learning takes place in small seminar groups, where you will develop your ability to make persuasive arguments and participate in debates.

Please note that the £13,842 international fee is for classroom based courses and provisional for 2023. For lab based courses a higher fee of £14,892 applies. EU students will be charged international fees unless they have settled status awarded by the UK Government's Settlement Scheme. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK/EU students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee. The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take. If your course includes a sandwich year option you will pay a reduced fee during this year; £1,370 for home students and £2,120 for international students.
