Join a unique learning environment – Ballet West is an acclaimed specialist ballet school in rural Scotland.
- Expand your career options through optional Royal Academy of Dance syllabus classes.
Test and develop your skills in performance, choreography, research and writing with this specialist course, delivered at Ballet West, Scotland. Expand your knowledge, experience and appreciation of dance practices within a variety of contexts, and hone your techniques in classical ballet, while also exploring contemporary and jazz dance.
Our aim is that, when you graduate, you'll be able to work well in companies and be adaptable to different styles and methods of working. We also want you to develop as a reflective dance practitioner, with a well-developed personal appreciation of the nature and potential of dance as an art form.
Modules in Classical Ballet Techniques take you from the foundations of ballet to professional standard ballet, through daily ballet classes and work on the classical ballet repertoire.
Dance Technique modules help you to professional standard through regular technique classes and work on repertoire and newly created work.
During Professional Practice and Performance modules, you'll participate in the creation, rehearsal and performance of two productions each year:
A full-length classical ballet performed on tour, and
A contemporary and jazz showcase.
All performances are public, and take place in leading venues in Scotland. You'll work within a company of professional dancers, choreographer and technicians.
Choreography modules teach choreographic techniques and the role of dance in cultural and historical contexts, enabling you to create and discuss your own original work.
In your final year, you'll complete an Independent Study project based in an area of individual interest to you, which can be presented in any way that is negotiated and agreed with the module tutor. Also in your final year, the Professional Dancer module prepares you for life after your studies, providing skills in self-promotion and audition technique.
You're taught through a mix of studio based practical classes and rehearsals in ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, body conditioning and choreography, and classroom based work on research skills and the history and cultural contexts of dance.
We expect you to undertake self-directed learning in creating your own choreographic work, maintaining fitness and researching individual projects.
