Course summary
The FdA Street and Hip-Hop Vernacular Dance covers an eclectic mix of styles and techniques, including Breaking, Popping, Locking, House, Waacking, Voguing and Hip-Hop Foundations, underpinned by core techniques. You'll acquire and refine essential skills to an advanced and professional standard through industry-led projects and performance opportunities. We focus on preparing you for employment while nurturing your creative identity and practice. This original and innovative programme will allow you to explore and expand your creative identity within a range of dance forms and styles. This programme allows you to work with leading practitioners to ensure you become a diverse and artistic practitioner. Delivered by Shockout Arts, our 2-year FdA Street and Hip-Hop Vernacular Dance course supports you to acquire and develop essential technical, artistic and theoretical competence through professional training at Level 5. If you're an aspiring dance artist, this foundation degree provides an ideal platform to begin your professional career in dance and the performing arts. In addition, as a foundation degree graduate, you'll be able to continue your studies at an advanced level by completing a level 6 final year top-up course to gain a BA (Hons) qualification. Our BA (Hons) Street Dance Artistry and Hip-Hop Theatre (Top-Up), also delivered by Shockout Arts, offers a seamless continuation of your studies with us. We'll consider your application through assessment and interview. You'll be based at Shockout Arts, studying and training in their purpose-built, high-specification dance studios equal to professional industry standards. Alongside your intensive practical dance training, you'll have regular performance opportunities to help you develop a diverse range of performance and production skills. In addition to exploring the core techniques, you'll be encouraged to build your skills in an exciting mix of urban styles and techniques, ready to take advantage of employment opportunities in Street Dance and Hip-Hop Theatre performance. You'll explore Breaking, Popping, Locking, House, Waacking, Voguing and Hip-Hop Foundations and be guided to develop a knowledge and understanding of the historical, cultural, societal and political factors that influence UK and international dance practice. Applications from International and EU students cannot usually be accepted because the study location for this course is not licenced by UKVI to sponsor students. You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics. If you don't have the above qualifications but possess equivalent qualifications or experience, we'll be happy to consider your application. In addition to attending an audition and interview, we may require you to provide a portfolio of work or complete another form of test so that we can assess your application.
