Course summary

The qualification is designed to provide undergraduates with opportunities to enhance and improve their business skills. The one year top-up course is ideal for those who have successfully completed a business related Foundation Degree and who are hoping to boost their career prospects or progress into business management. The course will enable undergraduates to strengthen their area of specialisation, or to extend the breadth of their knowledge in the main business functions. It has been designed to develop a student’s knowledge and understanding of business as a whole and the year will focus on enhancing and expanding the core skills and expertise required to progress in the world of work with confidence and self-assurance.

Modules

Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to visit local businesses to enhance their understanding and perception of their studies. Visiting academics and employers will further enrich their experience on the course. Three compulsory modules form the foundation of undergraduate studies: •Business Strategy •Contemporary Issues in Business •Personal and Professional Development for Business A further three modules will be studied throughout this course. These may include: •Coaching and Mentoring •Contemporary Retail Marketing •Enterprise in Practice •Finance and Accounting •International Marketing •Learning and Development •Logistics and Supply Chain Management Teaching and learning on the course will be delivered through a range of lectures, workshops, research seminars, group work, project work and guest speakers. Guest speakers from different areas of business will conduct workshops and Q&A sessions. Students will be involved in the performance of lab experiments and research activities.

Assessment method

Assessment will be via a combination of coursework, exams and presentations.

Qualification requirements

The University’s minimum standard entry requirements for degree level study on a top up programme is completion of study up to a level that is equivalent to the first two years of a university degree programme in that topic. e.g. HND Business FDA Business studies Diploma of Higher Education (following two years of advanced study) Or Equivalent UK or Overseas award. Applications from individuals with non-standard qualifications, relevant work or life experience and who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from this degree-level programme are welcome and these applicants will be interviewed. If applicants have not studied recently they may need to undertake an Access programme first.

Interview

Additional Selection Criteria: Meeting the minimum entry requirement for a course does not necessarily guarantee a place. Entry to all courses is subject to a successful interview. When assessing an application, we take into account your grades, predicted grades, reference and personal statement. From your personal statement and interview, we consider your motivation and commitment to success, and any relevant experience you may have. For some courses, we may also ask for a portfolio of appropriate work or an audition, or you may be required to find a work placement prior to enrolment. Mature Students: We recognise that some mature students may not meet the standard entry requirements but may have gained knowledge and skills from relevant work or life experience and, therefore, we would consider your application on an individual basis. We would take into account your work and life experience and may ask you to discuss this in more details at interview. Interview: All applicants are invited to attend an interview with either the Course Leader or Course Tutor. You will be notified of your interview by our Admissions Team who will also update UCAS Track with details of your application. Equivalent international qualifications will be considered towards meeting the general entry requirements.


English language requirements

EU students, for whom English is not the first language, will be required to evidence an IELTS score or 6.0 or equivalent. Equivalences include: • TOEFL written examination score of 550 plus a test of written English (at 4) • TOEFL Computer Equivalent score of 230 • Proficiency in English (Cambridge) at Grade C or above
