87.9% of our research outputs in Engineering were assessed to be world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021) About the course Begin your journey towards becoming a skilled engineer in robotics and mechatronics – our emphasis on engineering practices sets you up for success. You’ll engage in exciting topics including mechatronics, autonomous vehicles, embedded systems, robotics and control engineering. During your studies, you’ll:

  • cover theoretical aspects needed to solve problems in the field of robotics and mechatronics
  • develop hands-on experience in laboratories on industrial-grade equipment such as a mechatronics platform, mobile robots, industrial robotic manipulators and 3D printers
  • gain autonomy, and apply the knowledge you’ve gained through individual and interdisciplinary group projects
  • have the chance to apply for a placement to get work experience in industry, while still being supported at Sussex.
You’ll work on cutting-edge technologies and real-world challenges, honing your problem-solving skills. This hands-on approach not only empowers you but also equips you with the essential skills for your future career. When you graduate, you’ll be well prepared for a career in robotics and automation engineering with a wide diversity of application sectors including:
  • space technologies
  • manufacturing
  • automotive engineering
  • transport
  • IoT (Internet of Things)
  • communications
  • aerospace.
This Master of Engineering (MEng) degree lets you specialise your degree with a range of options and provides you with the educational requirements needed to become a Chartered Engineer. In your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to choose and explore advanced topics at the forefront of mechatronics and robotics. This includes advanced electronic systems, cybernetics, neural networks and image processing. By practising marketing analysis and financial strategic planning, you’ll not only develop your technical knowledge but also sharpen your entrepreneurship skills. To help you gain experience and increase your employability, you can apply for an optional placement as part of your course. This can be a fantastic opportunity to gain real-life insight into industry as well as skills valued by employers. You’ll be responsible for applying for and securing your placement. Don’t worry if you’re not successful, you’ll simply transfer to a non-placement version of your course. We also offer this course as a four-year MEng without the industrial placement year, as a three-year BEng, or as a four-year BEng with an industrial placement year.
