Course summary

INTRODUCTION Welcome to College of Esports BSc (Hons) Games Development which focuses on developing your skills and understanding of the creative processes involved in creating video games. This course is about the creation of workflows in technical games development, applied to multiple games engines, and the creation of compelling technical features in games for both the esports and wider games industry. WHY ARE WE DIFFERENT & UNIQUE? The College of Esports is a boutique university-level institution for a modern world:

  • A world-first in higher education dedicated to the world of esports and gaming.
  • Exclusive university-level partner of the British Esports Federation.
  • An iconic campus set within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
  • Our unique TRI-Curriculum approach.
WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? The UK games sector is the largest in Europe and the sector is rapidly growing and is a highly skills-based industry seeking graduate employment. A typical games studio will have 80% of staff qualified to degree level or above, and specific skills are needed to excel in this field. On this course, not only will you have the opportunity to design games for the wider games industry, but, with our partnership with the British Esports Federation and its network, you can focus part of your course in the design and development of esports games. We aim to prepare you with the competencies needed to adapt and thrive in life’s continuously changing environments, employment and an increasingly diverse global society. Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of games production workflows in multiple games engines, as well showing industry-level competencies in games documentation and project management skills. The Foundation Year (Year 0) is the first part of a four-year degree programme. It provides an alternative route for those unable to meet the traditional entry requirements for a three-year degree or are returning to study later in life. In year one, you focus on games design and production in multiple games engines to give you the ability to appreciate the fundamental workflows in technical games development. The main focus in year two is that you will get stuck into the Junior Games Development units. In these units you will work in a multidisciplinary team alongside the Games Art and Games Design Students as the junior games engineer to produce a game. You will work under the senior games engineer. You will also study supporting units in advanced games mechanics and prototyping, which further your competencies in technical games development. Your final year project will allow you to demonstrate the area you have most passion for and to take this to a deeper level of knowledge and understanding. You will also challenge and hone your leadership skills as you act as senior games engineer in the Senior Games Development. In these units you will work in a multidisciplinary team alongside the Games Art and Games Design Students as the senior games engineer to produce a game as well as having responsibility for the junior engineers in that team.
