Course summary

The MSc Global Nursing Studies will enable you to develop an understanding and critical awareness of issues at the forefront of nursing from a global perspective. Designed for both UK based and international nurses, the course will help you develop in the four pillars of nursing practice:

  • clinical practice
  • education
  • leadership
  • research
You will develop your ways of thinking. This will help you to become an independent learner who thinks creatively to solve problems using evidence-based approaches. This includes critical reflection, application of theory, and critical appraisal. You will learn collaboratively with others about researching, appraising, and applying evidence. You will understand how these concepts can be used in your global professional practice. This will help to develop your confidence to critically analyse the research process. This will enable you to influence practice by sharing knowledge and ideas from around the world. You'll learn full-time, on campus, giving you the opportunity to learn and share experiences with other students from around the world. Why you should study this course The aims of this course are to:
  • Provide a learning environment where you will develop the knowledge and skills required. This will allow you to enhance your nursing practice and careers.
  • To encourage collegiality and sharing. The course will create a community of nursing scholars who show ‘Mastersness’. This includes complexity, abstraction, depth, research, autonomy, unpredictability, and professionalism.
  • Empower you to develop as a nurse leader of the future. This will enable you to guide the delivery of the highest standards of patient care using evidence-based approaches. You will also learn to apply them to the global context.
You will gain a culturally informed understanding of the role of nurses in global health including healthcare needs, systems and priorities. You'll also learn about their role in relation to global policies and frameworks. Throughout the course, links will be made to the World Health Organisation’s Sustainable Development Goals. You will evaluate the nature of nursing and explore the role of nurses as influencers. You'll do this alongside applying a range of theories, principles and frameworks relating to assessment in a variety of contexts. What will you learn You will study four course specific modules. These are focused on nursing practice. You will also study three framework modules, designed to develop your academic, digital and research skills. These will prepare you for the eighth, and final, dissertation module. Topics areas covered include:
  • The art and science of nursing practice and your role in influencing care policy and practice
  • Taking nursing assessment and applying it to the global context
  • Understanding the role of nurses in global health
  • Developing leadership skills in healthcare
  • The nature of evidence and how to evaluate and apply it in nursing practice
Our academic staff have considerable experience of teaching international and UK-based students. Throughout the course, you will have direct access to the module team who can provide any guidance and support you might need.
