Course summary
The MRes in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Research at Kingston University provides you with the advanced laboratory and research skills required for your future career, within the chemical and pharmaceutical science industry. This is an ideal stepping stone if you are interested in progressing onto a PhD. During this one-year masters by research programme, our core modules will equip you with the subject expertise and skills to be able to undertake a major piece of industry demand-led original research. This postgraduate research degree is designed to provide you with advanced research training and experience in preparation for doctoral studies, research intensive career or to fulfil the demands of a growing chemical and pharmaceutical science sector, covering areas such as pharmaceutical discovery, manufacturing, cosmetics, personalised healthcare, and biotechnology, as well as the energy industry focussing upon the development of sustainable materials chemistry. The research and critical thinking skills that you will gain in this programme will prepare you for roles in the field, whether within a laboratory setting, commercial setting or for PhD study. We are launching this new degree in September 2026. Currently, the programme is subject to validation.
Modules
Example modules include Advanced Research Methods and Skills, Innovation, Discovery and Research in Industry (with various routes dependent upon the research specialism you wish to pursue such as Natural Products with Pharmacognosy, Cosmetic Science, Nanotechnology and Sustainable Materials) and Research.
Entry requirements
A 2:2 or above honours degree in chemistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical science, pharmacology, biological science or biomedical science. Other chemistry or medical science degrees will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants with alternative qualifications will also need appropriate experience (in healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry or a regulatory body, for example). Please note: we assess each application on an individual basis and your application may be subject to additional requirements, such as undertaking short course(s), work experience and/or English language qualification(s). Meeting particular minimum entry requirements does not automatically guarantee a place.
